About

Dr. Venkatesan Chakrapani, MD, PhD, is Chairperson of the Centre for Sexuality and Health Research and Policy (C-SHaRP: www.c-sharp.in) in Chennai; DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance CRC grantee at the Humsafar Trust (Host Institution) in Mumbai; and Adjunct Professor, School of Social Sciences, National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) in Bengaluru. He has been conducting applied and policy-oriented health research among sexual and gender minorities in India for nearly two decades. His studies have provided evidence base on: stigma, discrimination and structural violence; barriers to HIV prevention/treatment services and gender transition; effect of sexual and gender minority stigma on mental health, association between psychosocial problems and HIV risk, acceptability of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, presence of syndemics and effectiveness of syndemic-based interventions. He has published 110 peer-reviewed research articles, seven book chapters and 80+ policy/technical reports. He is a trainer in manuscript and grant writing, as well as advanced data analyses (qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods). In India, he has conducted several training programs for healthcare providers on sexual and gender minorities (training manuals can be downloaded from www.indianLGBThealth.info). He is the Chair of NACO's Technical Resource Group (TRG) on trans people and a member of NACO's TRG on men who have sex with men. In 2013/14, he served as a member of the Ministry of Social Justice's Expert Committee on Trans people (https://socialjustice.gov.in/writereaddata/UploadFile/Binder2.pdf). He has received several fellowships including the DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance Senior Fellowship, India; NIH Fogarty Fellowship from Yale University, USA; and the FLD Fellowship of the MacArthur Foundation, India.
