About
Dr. Sachin Balasaheb Shinde is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, working in the Polymer Engineering and Colloid Science Laboratory in the Department of Chemical Engineering under the guidance of Abhijit Deshpande. His research focuses on rheology, crystallization, and complex fluid behavior, with applications in pharmaceutical and energy systems.
At IIT Madras, he is engaged in interdisciplinary and industry-driven research, including a collaborative project with Pfizer (USA), where he is developing rheomicroscopy as a novel tool to study crystallization of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). His work demonstrates how shear influences nucleation and crystal growth, enabling control over crystal size, morphology, and uniformity—critical for pharmaceutical manufacturing and process optimization. In parallel, he is developing a rheological framework to understand fluid behavior under competing viscous, inertial, and surface tension forces, introducing the concept of “splash stress” to quantify fluid ejection phenomena. Prior to this, Sachin worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, where he investigated flow restart behavior in waxy crude oil pipelines, focusing on gelation, yield stress, and restart pressure—key challenges in flow assurance.
He completed his Ph.D. at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, where his research focused on the rheological characterization of waxy crude oil to optimize design and operating conditions and mitigate flow assurance issues. During his Master’s at National Institute of Technology Surat, he worked on thermal systems for waste heat recovery, particularly thermosyphon heat pipes. His undergraduate training provided strong experimental and fabrication experience, including the development of a tribometer and the design of thermosyphon heat pipe systems. These experiences have strengthened his ability to design experimental setups and translate theoretical concepts into practical engineering solutions. With over seven years of research experience, Sachin aims to contribute to academia through teaching and research in rheology, fluid mechanics, and energy systems.
