Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus. Recognized for inventing the Syal Method for biofilm and biomass quantification, now widely adopted in microbiology research. Uncovered novel antibacterial roles of Vitamin C, contributed to the design of non‑toxic sugar‑based antimicrobials, and advanced understanding of bacterial stress responses, transcriptional regulation, and host–pathogen interactions.

Ph.D from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Postdoctoral training at the University of Copenhagen, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for various durations.

His contributions have been recognized with awards, including the Sun Pharma Award and the DBT Ramalingaswami Fellowship. He continues to lead interdisciplinary research in genetics and molecular microbiology, with a focus on translational applications in drug resistance and vaccine design.
