TANMOY CHAKRABORTY

About

Tanmoy Chakraborty holds the Rajiv Khemani Young Faculty Chair in AI and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Yardi School of Artificial Intelligenceat the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi), India. Before joining IIT Delhi, he served as an Assistant Professor (May 2017 - Dec 2021) and an Associate Professor (Jan 2022 - Sep 2022) in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIIT Delhi, India. He also served as the head of the Infosys Centre for Artificial Intelligence at IIIT Delhi. He has received numerous national and international fellowships -- Ramanujan (2018-2023), DAAD (2018), PECFAR Fellowship (2023), ELISE visiting professor (2024), and Humboldt (2025-2026), INSA Young Associate (2025). Tanmoy obtained his Ph.D. as a Google PhD scholar from the Department of CSE, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India, in September 2015. Following this, he joined the University of Maryland, College Park, as a Postdoctoral Researcher. His broad research interests include Natural Language Processing, Graph Neural Networks, and Social Computing. His current research includes economical, adoptable and interpretable language models and applying them to two specific applications -- mental health and cyber-informatics.

He established and is currently leading the Laboratory for Computational Social Systems (LCS2) research group. He has authored two textbooks -- "Social Network Analysis" and "Introduction to Large Language Models", on which he has been offering NPTEL courses. He is an ACM Distinguished Speaker (2023-2025) and a senior member of ACM and IEEE. He is involved in the organizing/program committee of almost all top AI/ML/NLP conferences, including his role as the Program Chair of ASONAM'24 and EMNLP'25 and local chair of AACL'25.
