Research Statement
The hip joint is a main joint to support the human body, the damage or arthritic hip joint replaced by total hip replacement surgery. The hip prosthesis consists of the femoral stem, femoral head, acetabular liner, and acetabular socket. The present work deals with modeling, analysis, fabrication, and validation of ceramic femoral head and acetabular liner. The optimum size of 30 mm obtained through static and dynamic analysis. During dynamic analysis, the wear depth and wear volume are 0.463 mm and 2.62 mm3/year, respectively. The optimum SrO doped composite (94.5 wt.% Al2O3, 5 wt.% 3YSZ and 0.5 wt.% SrO) has sintered density (~99.2%), Vickers hardness (~ 19 GPa), fracture toughness (~ 5.9 MPa.m1/2) and flexural strength (~ 510 MPa). The obtained specific wear rate during tribological analysis increase from 1.67×10-8 mm3/N.m to 2.59×10-8 mm3/N.m for 10 N and 30 N loads, respectively. The uniaxial pressing method used to fabricate the femoral head and acetabular liner under 60 KN load. The green components are pre-sintered at 1200°C-2h and then machining. Finally, two-step sintering schedule the machined components at 1600°C, followed by 1500°C-6h. The fabricated femoral head and acetabular liner components validated through burst strength, fracture surface microstructural analysis, 3D optical profilometer analysis, micro-CT analysis, and biological analysis.
