About
I am an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Bologna, Department for Life Quality Studies. I teach Philosophy of medicine to medical students and nutritionists.
My work is on the philosophical issues arising in medical and psychological research, that is, issues that cannot be addressed by evidence alone. I recently published on the epistemology of diagnostic imaging modalities, and on the concepts of health and wellbeing. A broader project I am pursuing is on thick concepts in medicine, that is, concepts that describe and evaluate at the same time. Efficacy and appropriateness are examples, but I suspect there are many more. I am also interested in norms for ethical scientific communication and dissemination. I worked on vaccine hesitancy and on the hydroxychloroquine case during the pandemic. In the first decade of my career, I worked in the philosophy of psychology and cognitive science, mainly on concepts and on whether language changes concepts.
I studied in Bologna (BA Philosophy, 1997), Vercelli (PhD Philosophy of Language, 2003), London (Birkbeck college, visiting student, 1999-2001), and Aberdeen (Northen Institute of Philosophy, 2011-13). Until 2020 I taught philosophy of science and philosophy of language at Milano-Bicocca, Psychology Department, where I was hired with a permanent position (Lecturer) in 2006.
