About
Trained as a virologist. Then became interested in viruses transmitted by ticks. Discovered that viruses can be transmitted from infected to uninfected ticks feeding on the same animal (though physically separated) in the absence of virus in the blood of the animal (non-viraemic transmission). Went on to show that tick saliva promoted non-viraemic transmission and got interested in tick salivary gland products. Became involved in translational research, developing tick saliva proteins and peptides as novel drugs and vaccines. Founding scientist of two spin-out companies. Became Director of the Institute of Virology & Environmental Microbiology, Oxford, and then Director of the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), both owned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). Completed a successful £50m re-structuring of CEH. Short role as NERC Director on the integration of all NERC's research centres. Returned to academia in 2013 as Professor of Arbovirology, University of Oxford.
