About
Prof (Dr) Shyam R Asolekar is currently leading a team of consultants in Mumbai, India - which is a team of environmental technology and law experts (associates and partners) capable of guiding and designing for industries and municipalities with proven expertise in aspects of Environmental Compliance and Expansion Readiness as well as adoption of Circular Economy approaches and Preventive Environmental Management strategies. The team of consultants also desires to be the trainers and facilitators of corporates and gated communities for timely adoption of modern environmental engineering and management solutions for holistic sustainability.
Dr Asolekar served as a Professor for more than 31 years at the Environmental Science and Engineering Department (ESED), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), Mumbai (till June 30, 2024). Earlier, at at IIT Bombay, he served as the M.P.C.B. Chair Professor (Nov 2018 to December 2021). He also served as the Head of the Department during May 2006 and June 2009 and the President of the “Indian Environmental Association” during 2003-2005 term.
Dr Asolekar has been the Member of “Dahanu Taluka Environmental Protection Authority” (1997 to 2023) constituted by the Honorable Supreme Court of India - entrusted with the conservation and sustainable development of the eco-fragile region of Dahanu Taluka in Palghar District of the State of Maharashtra, India.
Recently, Dr Asolekar was given the ‘51st Annual Industrial Research Award’ for excellence in ‘Environmental Sciences & Technology' by the Vividhlaxi Audyogik Samshodhan Vikas Kendra (VASVIK) on January 31, 2026, in a ceremony in Mumbai. Earlier, IIT Bombay honoured Dr Asolekar with the “Professor S.P. Sukhatme Award for Excellence in Teaching” for the year 2020. Earlier, in 1999, he received the “Dr. P. K. Patwardhan Technology Development Award” from IIT-Bombay for development of innovative environmental technology. He was also a recipient of the award for “Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis” given by the American Chemical Society in 1991 for his doctoral research in Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa in USA.
Dr Asolekar holds two degrees in chemical engineering: an undergraduate degree from the Institute of Chemical Technology (formerly UDCT), Mumbai (1980) and a master’s degree from Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (1985). Subsequently, he went to the U.S. to obtain his M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Syracuse University (1987) and University of Iowa (1991), respectively. After pursuing his postdoctoral studies at the Harvard University in Cambridge, USA, he returned to India in December 1992 to teach at IIT Bombay.
