A consummate professional academic with 25 years of experience successfully executing multi country research studies to inform policy. Member of the Academy of Science in South Africa, recipient of HSRC-USAF Medal in Social Sciences and Humanities 2021, recognising excellence in social sciences research during the COVID-19 pandemic; and National Science and Technology Foundation Research Capacity Development Award (NSTF) 2004. Proven thought leader in social science research demonstrated by recent work in COVID-19 and how it relates to social science research and interventions. Outstanding stakeholder management skills having reported to senior leadership across international institutions and advised Cabinet Ministers (and the President of South Africa) across various portfolios in national governments. Proven ability to raise and effectively manage grant funds (including British MRC and DFID awards) and donor funds. Outstanding management skills in running nationwide multimillion Rand health research surveys with over ten thousand participants, and hundreds of research workers such as the three Youth Risk Behaviour Surveys in South Africa. Passion for and commitment to upliftment of previously disadvantaged South Africans evidenced by mentorships and over 15 successful PhD graduates who undertook research in South Africa whilst registered at Maastricht University, with intermittent training courses attended in the Netherlands through the course of their PhD studies. Developed, wrote and implemented a R45 million project of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme 2020 to 2021: the HSRC PYEI programme, that was designed to building the capacity of 1000 unemployed graduates in South Africa.
