About

Dr. Annie John is ICMR Emerita Scientist and was Professor Emerita UGC at the Advanced Centre for Tissue Engineering, Dept. of Biochemistry, University of Kerala, was a distinguished senior scientist (Scientist G &-in charge of the Transmission Electron Microscopy Laboratory and the Division of Laboratory Animal Sciences) of the faculty at the Biomedical Technology Wing, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences & Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, India. She earned her Ph.D. degree in Zoology from University of Kerala, a gold medalist and a first rank holder for her Masters in Zoology. She has availed the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellowship on three different occasions for foreign research at the Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences, Kyoto University, Japan and was also a Visiting Professor at Kyoto University.

Dr. Annie has pioneered biological Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) usage in India as a primary user of this technique for biomaterial evaluation. She has also pioneered work in Tissue Engineering in the breakthrough field of Regenerative Medicine. She has had the privilege of leading many national and international collaborated projects and Clinical Orthopedic Trials at CMC, Vellore for Proof of Concept using the cell-ceramic ‘combination product’ - Translation of first in India of regenerative medicine based technologies. Functional tissue generation by the use of revolutionary techniques in Regenerative Medicine with the end goal of repair, restoration or augmentation of musculoskeletal system has been her research focus. A member of several professional scientific bodies, her contributions in the biomedical research have paved way for the development of bone substitutes and dental fillings – marketable bone graft products - some of which are already being used in the clinics.

Based on Orthopaedic research done in the past two decades, several papers (63) and book chapters (7) have been published and presentations made on several national and international forums, winning several Group Awards as well as State Awards in Life and Health Sciences. She has been awarded the most prestigious ICMR Kshanika Oration Award for the year 2013 - a woman scientist for her meritorious work in Biomedical Research. She has got one patent filed contributing to the indigenous Intellectual Property generation. Quantum dots for imaging, superparamagnetic nanoparticles for drug delivery and cell separation are her other contributions to Nanoscience & Nanotechnology.

As a researcher and faculty she has passed along the spirit of scientific research by mentoring Ph.D., M.Tech, M.Phil and M.Sc students – contributing to the future of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine that is gaining relevance in India. Currently, her focus is on ethnic phytochemicals incorporated bioengineered scaffolds to regenerate/repair tissue defects.
