Brief Bio
Dr. Satya Veer Singh Malik, BVSc & AH (Honours), MVSc (Vet. Hygiene & Public Health), PhD (LPT) was born on August 19, 1960 in Jahangirabad, Bulandshaher, Uttar Pradesh, India.
In his distinguished and highly impactful career in Veterinary Public Health (VPH) and academic leadership, he steered the Division of VPH as Principal Scientist and Officiating Head for 11 years and 8 months, besides serving as Scientific Secretary to the Director (SSD) for 11 years and 8 months at ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Izatnagar, India.
He also served as Hostel Warden for 11 years at the Deemed University-IVRI, Izatnagar; in addition to contribute as Chairman of the Welcome and Farewell Committee of Staff Welfare Club (SWC) of IVRI for about 14 years since 2008, and a Member, Organizing Committee, SWC-IVRI from 2007 till his superannuation on August 31, 2022.
During his 34 years of a committed and illustrious research, teaching, and extension career at VPH Division of IVRI, Dr. Malik remained engaged in research on masked and emerging zoonotic and food-borne pathogens associated with reproductive disorders in humans and animals. His work focused on the development of rapid, reliable, and preferably on-site indigenous diagnostics for important but masked zoonoses—namely listeriosis, toxoplasmosis, coxiellosis, EAEC, and chlamydial infections—in humans and animals.
Dr. Malik has successfully handled 21 institute- and DBT-funded research projects (as PI: 11; Co-PI: 10). He developed the ICAR-sponsored Outreach Programme on Zoonotic Diseases (OPZD) in India involving a total of 19 medical & veterinary institutes in India, and subsequently, the ICAR-Sponsored One Health Programme on Zoonoses (OHPZ) during the EFC/SFC 2020–2025, with each network successfully involving a total of 15 medical and veterinary institutes across the country.
Dr. Malik has to his credit about 118 published papers (79 international and 39 national), including 62 international research articles, 8 reviews, and 9 data sheets in CAB International, as well as 33 national research articles, 4 reviews, and 2 compendia of winter schools and training programmes. He also contributed 16 book chapters (3 international and 13 national), 58 GenBank sequences of zoonotic pathogens, 4 extension bulletins/pamphlets, 13 folders, and 12 popular articles in Hindi for creating mass awareness about zoonotic diseases. He also delivered 106 lead/invited lectures, 3 television talks, 6 radio talks on various topics, and made 76 scientific presentations.
Dr. Malik has guided 27 PG students (14 PhD, 13 MVSc) as a major advisor and mentored a total of 48 PG students (23 PhD, 25 MVSc) in the core domain of his research. He designed 5 new courses and restructured 4 courses. He also developed several comprehensive digital capsules on zoonoses for teaching and training, 2 compendia for national training programs, and 4 units of chapters for online IGNOU diploma courses.
On a proactive note, Dr Malik organized 1 FAO-WHO sponsored training in AMR, 6 National workshops /Short term trainings, and 1 Winter school in frontier areas of VPH.
He also served as Associate Editor/Editor (1996–2010) of the Indian Journal of Comparative Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases (IJCMIID), and as a reviewer for many peer-reviewed international journals.
He has been a Life Member of the National Association for the Welfare of Animals and Research (NAWAR) since its inception on June 10, 2002; the Indian Society of Veterinary Medicine (ISVM) since 2002; and the Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists (IAVPHS) since its inception in 2003. He also served as Treasurer of the Dr. C.M. Singh Endowment Trust (CMST), Bareilly, for 14 years since 2008.
Dr. Malik has earned over 60 awards and recognitions, including the prestigious FAO/WHO Fellowship (1999) at the University of Liverpool, U.K.; the Best Teacher Award of IVRI (2000–01); and the Bharat Ratna Dr. C. Subramaniam ICAR National Award for Outstanding Teachers in Animal & Fisheries Sciences (2011). He served as a Member of the Scientific Committee for the International Society for Problems on Listeriosis (ISOPOL) Symposium in 2013, besides serving as an Expert Member on the Standing Committee on Zoonoses at ICMR for 11 years, and as a Member of the Expert Group, DAHD&F, Govt. of India.
He has been serving as the Vice President of the Society for Research on Listeria in India (SLRI) since its inception on September 14, 2012. As per the Google Scholar, his h-index is 34, and his i10-index is 84, with a total of 4,186 citations.
