About

Prof. (Dr.) Hitesh D. Patel is Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, India. He is an accomplished researcher and academician with more than 27 years of teaching and research experience in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Drug Discovery, Green Chemistry, Natural Product Synthesis, Marine Medicine, Oceanology, and Diagnostic Kit Development. His multidisciplinary research integrates in silico molecular design, synthetic organic chemistry, and biological evaluation to develop novel therapeutic agents and diagnostic tools for various human diseases.
Prof. Hitesh's research primarily focuses on the computer-aided design and development of small-molecule therapeutics targeting cancer, tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), HIV/AIDS, malaria, diabetes, and other infectious and non-infectious diseases. His group employs advanced computational techniques, including molecular modeling, virtual screening, molecular docking, and structure-based drug design, to identify and optimize lead compounds. These designed molecules are subsequently synthesized using environmentally sustainable green chemistry approaches, followed by purification, characterization, and biological evaluation.
A major component of his research program involves the discovery of anticancer agents. Since 2002, his laboratory has maintained an active collaboration with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), USA, where more than 148 compounds developed by his group have been screened against the NCI-60 human cancer cell line panel. With the establishment of a Biosafety Level-2 (BSL-2) facility at Gujarat University, his team now conducts several anticancer and cytotoxicity studies on campus, enabling faster preclinical evaluation of novel compounds.
Prof. Hitesh has published more than 160 research articles and authored 14 books. He has successfully completed 12 major research projects funded by agencies including SAC-ISRO, BIRAC, SSIP, UNICEF, GUSEC, GUCOST, and UGC. His scholarly contributions are reflected in an h-index of 32, more than 4,000 citations, and an i10-index of 77. He has supervised 19 Ph.D. scholars and 15 M.Phil. students and is currently mentoring numerous doctoral researchers.
An innovator and entrepreneur, Prof. Hitesh has filed 32 patents and secured 16 granted Indian patents, with several additional patents under evaluation. He is the Founder and Director of HD4U Diagnostic and Therapeutics Research Pvt. Ltd., a startup focused on translating laboratory discoveries into healthcare solutions. His research and innovation activities have attracted substantial funding for scientific research, infrastructure development, and advanced instrumentation.
Prof. Hitesh has received numerous national and international recognitions, including being listed among the World's Top 5% Scientists (2025), the CII IP Driven Award, the ISCB Best Teacher Award, the Vikram Sarabhai Community Science Laureate Award, the ICC Award, the BIDDS Award, and the UGC Research Award. He is a Fellow of the Indian Chemical Society (FICS), the Indian Society of Chemists and Biologists (FISCB), and the Indian Council of Chemists (FICC), and actively contributes to academic leadership through various professional societies, boards of studies, and research networks.
His current research vision is centered on integrating computational chemistry, medicinal chemistry, green synthesis, and translational biomedical research to accelerate the discovery of next-generation therapeutics and diagnostics for global health challenges.
