About
My research activities are focused on the study of spatial and temporal variations of macrofaunal communities inhabiting coastal and transitional areas subject to different kinds of impact (both natural and anthropogenic origins). I draw my attention to the benthic ecology, especially the study of biodiversity, functional and trophic features of the macrofaunal community. During the past years, I studied macrofaunal on spatial and temporal scales from a coastal area directly influenced by river flows (Po River and its deltaic system) to areas subject to anthropogenic pressures, such as the Port of Trieste and the Mar Piccolo of Taranto. Studies of functional traits (Biological Traits Analyses-BTA) and benthic food webs (stable isotopes analyses) were applied to macrofaunal communities inhabiting the coastal areas previously cited, in order to highlight the response of these communities to the impacted sediments and how they affect the benthic ecosystem functioning. Recently, I paid my attention to the reworking and biorrigation activities of macrofaunal communities in the Po River lagoonal system. I integrated the biomass of invertebrates with their bioturbation and bioirrigation attributes for obtaining major information about the macrofaunal reworking process on coastal ecosystems. Concurrently ecological study, I’m working on morphological and genetic investigation of polychaetes in order to study the presence of new species. In addition, I am trying to detect a new methodological approach in monitoring studies that combine taxonomic and genetic analyses.
