About
Dr. Urmila Kulkarni-Kale has obtained PhD in Bioinformatics from Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly University of Pune) and hers is the second Ph.D. in Bioinformatics in India. She is associated with the Bioinformatics Centre since its inception and has worked at various positions starting as a student to the Director with the primary position of Information Scientist. She is an elected fellow of the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences. She has more than 20 years of teaching & research experience in Bioinformatics and has been instrumental in designing syllabus of masters’ and PhD courses for various institutes and universities. She has significantly contributed in design, coordination and implementation of the bioinformatics national certification examination (BINC) on behalf of the DBT, Govt. of India and is currently a member of the BINC national coordination committee. She has been faculty for > 90 national and >15 international workshops organized by WHO, TDR, ICGEB & NCBI. She has delivered several talks in the international conferences. She has national and international collaborations, with extra mural finding from various agencies as well as industries.
Her group is working in the area of viroinformatics to study the evolutionary landscape of various RNA and DNA viruses. Her group has designed several algorithms, approaches and methods that helps to map the landscape of existing and emerging lineages of various viruses with a goal to establish genotype-phenotype correlations. The group along with colleagues from Dept. of Statistics, have successfully developed RTD-based alignment-free algorithm for clustering, phylogeny and typing of viruses. Her group has been successful in establishing productive collaborations with virologists from India and abroad. She has designed and developed various databases, algorithms and servers for archival, analysis and interpretation of molecular data, some of which are the firsts in the respective categories. She has an international patent, a few book chapters and several papers in the peer reviewed high impact factor international journals to her credit.
