Dr. Krishnamurthi Kannan obtained Masters degree in Environmental Toxicology from Dr. A.L.M. Post Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (Madras University), Chennai, and Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) in Biochemistry from RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur. He is serving in CSIR-NEERI since September 1995, prior to which he was working as Scientist at CSIR-IITR, Lucknow during 1st January 1992 to August 1995 in the areas of biochemical and genetic toxicology of asbestos fibers and its alternates using In Vitro and In Vivo systems. Dr. Krishnamurthi is currently heading Waste and Chemical toxicity Assessment Sub Vertical prior to this he was heading Health and Toxicity Cell since 27th June 2018 and Environmental Health Division from
9th April, 2010 to 26th December, 2016. His group at CSIR-NEERI deals with Occupational and Environmental Health (air & water pollution). He has mentored two junior and one senior scientist’s in his Division and also mentorship for Ph.D. research scholars for their research programs, he has been project leader for many of the government, industry sponsored research and consultancy projects. Dr. Krishnamurthi was nominated by the Ministry of Petrochemicals and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), New Delhi as a team leader from CSIR-NEERI to investigate the styrene leak incidence occurred on 7th May 2020 at M/s. L.G. Polymers Pvt. Ltd., Vishakhapatnam (Vizag) and submitted the investigation report to the respective ministries based on which further damage assessment of the area was carried out by CPCB, New Delhi. Dr. Krishnamurthi successfully carried out India’s first onsite and In Situ bioremediation of acrylonitrile contaminated soil using mixed bacterial consortia at M/s. J. R. Enterprises, Kandla Port, Gujarat. This work was appreciated by the industry. His specializations include environmental and industrial toxicology, environmental monitoring, exposure assessment and health risk assessment including climate change and health impacts, mitigation of GHG using microbial system vis a vis value addition in the forms of biofuel, pharmaceutical, food products etc. As head of the Environmental Health Division, Dr. Krishnamurthi has initiated environmental health research at CSIR-NEERI for early health risk assessment and biomarker identification. Epidemiology and biomonitoring approaches have been established to undertake the health risk assessment of the population. He is working with the government, judiciaries, and industries for health impact assessment whenever there is an emergency/exposure.
Dr. Krishnamurthi has about 33 years of research experience with involvement in
over 40 research and consultancy projects in various capacities i.e. principal investigator and co-investigator. He has organized about 13 National and International conferences/symposia in the capacities of convener, co-organizing secretary and organizing secretary. He is an Editorial Board member for about 5 International Journals, reviewer for about 15 National and International journals. He has published more than 110 publications in various National and International journals, presented papers in about 120 National and International conferences, he has three international patents to his credit. He also served as an expert committee member to review ICMR, New Delhi sponsored research project on the Centre of advanced research on air pollution and health effects at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRU), Chennai. He was also a committee member on climate change and health at Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi. He served as member of Board of Studies in Biotechnology & Biochemistry at RTMNU, Nagpur, he is committee member for Project Advisory and Monitoring Committee (PAMC) of Earth and Environmental Scinces, New Delhi since 2016 till date. He is also a member of Research Advisory Board of ICMR-Institute namely National Institute for Research on Environmental Health (ICMR-NIREH), Bhopal.Currently he is a Co-Chairman for the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) for National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH), Ahmedabad.
Dr. Krishnamurthi plans to continue his engagement in occupational and environmental health and climate change mitigation research that are likely to bring changes in policy decisions with impact in reducing health burden of India.
