Career Summary
Dr. Virinder Kumar Bansal completed his MBBS from Government Medical College, Patiala (Punjabi University)
in 1987 and his MS (Surgery) from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER),
Chandigarh (Panjab University) in 1995. Following postgraduate training, he served as Senior Resident at
PGIMER, Chandigarh; Lecturer and Senior Resident at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana; and Senior Lecturer
at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Chandigarh, before joining the All India Institute of
Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi as Assistant Professor of Surgery in June 2003. He has been Professor of
Surgery since July 2014 and Head of Surgical Unit since April 2022.
At AIIMS New Delhi, Dr. Bansal has built a comprehensive clinical practice in minimally invasive surgery,
laparoscopic hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, complex hernia surgery, and renal transplantation —
performing over 564 laparoscopic and robotic donor nephrectomies and over 514 laparoscopic common bile
duct explorations. He has supervised 125 completed MS theses and 10 MCh theses, has over 200 indexed
publications with an h-index of 36, and has served as Associate Dean (Academics) from 2013 to 2017. He
undertook a Fellowship in Laparoscopic Surgery at the University Hospital, Tuebingen, Germany in 2006,
following which he established the Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Training Centre at AIIMS — the first
SAGES-endorsed training centre in India, which has conducted over 110 operative laparoscopy courses to date.

He holds honorary fellowships of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS Glasg), the International College of Laparoscopic Surgeons (FCLS), and the National
Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS/MNAMS). He has been President of both the Society of Endoscopic and
Laparoscopic Surgeons of India (SELSI) and the Indian Hernia Society (IHS), of which he is also Founder
Honorary Secretary.

Dr. Bansal has held significant administrative responsibilities at AIIMS New Delhi over the course of his career.
He served as Associate Dean (Academics) from November 2013 to April 2017, during which he led curriculum
reforms, initiated 47 new academic courses, and served concurrently as Member Secretary of the Deans
Committee, Staff Council, PhD Curriculum Reforms Committee, and the Convocation and Institute Day
Committees. He was Member of the Institute Ethics Committee from 2013 to 2018, the Research Advisory
Council, the Dean Research Committee, and the Faculty Screening Committee. Since 2022 he has served as
Head of Surgical Unit, and currently holds the positions of Chairman SPC DO Stores (since May 2025), Co-
Chairman SPC Hospital Stores (since April 2024), Chairman Make in India Exemptions Committee (since
September 2022), Professor In-Charge ABPMJAY Scheme (since March 2023), and Member of the Technical
Committee for Global Tender Exemptions, Government of India (since March 2024).
Outside AIIMS, Dr. Bansal has served on the Institute Body and Governing Body of AIIMS Rishikesh (May 2020–
May 2025), as Chairman of its Standing Selection Committee, and as Member of its Standing Academic and
Finance Committees. He has served on the Hospital Affairs Committee and Institute Body of JIPMER,
