About

Joana Magalhães holds a B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, 2005. In 2008, she obtained a European Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, by Complutense University (Spain) with summa cum laude distinction. She currently works as a Senior Researcher and Research Manager at Science for Change in the interface of science communication, evidence informed policies and participatory research. Previously she held a Postdoctoral Research position at INIBIC-CICA Consortium, as a Coordinator of the Regenerative Medicine Unit, of the Rheumatology Research Group (INIBIC). During that period she was a Full-Member of CIBER-BBN and an Invited Professor at 3 Inter-University Master Programs and a MOOC on Biomaterials, at the Universities of A Coruña and Vigo. Previous positions include a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Networking Biomedical Research Center (CIBER) and a Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher Fellowship in CSIC, supervised by Prof. Julio San Roman, with mobility stays at the University of Sheffield, with Prof. Paul V. Hatton and the University of Minho, with Prof. Rui L. Reis.
She has a multidisciplinary profile in fabrication and characterization of natural and synthetic polymeric biomaterials and the development of therapeutic tools using human mesenchymal stromal cells and chondrogenic differentiation with application in musculoskeletal diseases such as osteoarthritis. In addition, Joana Magalhães also develops STEAM-for-health communication strategies involving different media (television, radio, new media) and is an advocate for Open Science initiatives that enroll young girls into STEAM and that promote women in science role models. Her work in the field of social communication of science has received several international distinctions and awards, including becoming a Numerary Academic at the Galician Academy for Portuguese Language. In 2025, she was recognised with the prestigious Marie Sklodoswka Curie Alumni Association Career Award. She currently serves as a board member of Divulgaccion and is Vice-Chair for the Policy Working Group, and member of CS4Health Working Group, at the European Society for Citizen Science (ECSA). She has been a board member of AMIT-Galician Node (2017-2021) the Spanish National Chapter Representative of the Young Scientist Forum in Biomaterials from the European Society of Biomaterials (2015-2022), founder member of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (Iberian Chapter).
