About
Dr. Laxmidhar Rout is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Berhampur, Odisha. He was born in Basudevpur, Bhadrak, Odisha.
Dr. Rout received his M.Sc. in Chemistry from Utkal University, where he specialized in Synthetic Organic Chemistry under the guidance of Prof. Satyaban Jena. He obtained his Ph.D. in 2008 from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati under the supervision of Prof. T. Punniyamurthy. After completing his doctoral studies, he pursued postdoctoral research at several internationally renowned institutions. His research focused on organic synthesis, particularly the synthesis of anticancer and antimalarial molecules, asymmetric synthesis, and related areas of medicinal and synthetic chemistry. He worked with Prof. A. M. Harned at the University of Minnesota, USA; Prof. C. G. Zhao at the University of Texas at San Antonio, USA; Prof. S. M. Huber at the Technical University of Munich, Germany; and Dr. Ludger Johannes and Dr. Emmanuel Bassereau at Institut Curie, Paris, France. In recognition of his research excellence, Dr. Rout has been awarded the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (Germany), as well as the FPGG Fellowship and the Institut Curie (IC) Fellowship (France). Before joining IISER Berhampur as an Associate Professor in July 2026, Dr. Rout served as a UGC Assistant Professor at Berhampur University, Odisha, where he accumulated eleven year ten month of teaching and research experience, primarily mentoring postgraduate students and establishing an active research program in synthetic organic chemistry. Dr. Rout has published more than 50 peer-reviewed research articles in leading international journals published by Wiley, Elsevier, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and the American Chemical Society (ACS). He has also authored eight problem-solving books in Organic Chemistry for BS-MS students, which serve as valuable learning resources for undergraduate and postgraduate education. His current research interests include Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Sustainable Organic Synthesis, Nano-catalysis in Organic Synthesis, Medicinal chemistry, and the development of biologically active molecules. He maintains active research collaborations with scientists from leading academic institutions in India and across the world, contributing to innovative and interdisciplinary research in chemical sciences.
