I am a prominent scientist specializing in Entomology and Vector Biology, primarily known for my research on the control of Visceral Leishmaniasis (Kala-azar). I was a Scientist at the Rajendra Memorial Research Institute of Medical Sciences (RMRIMS), under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in Patna, India. Myscientific contributions focus on the behavior, susceptibility, and control of Phlebotomus argentipes, the sandfly vector responsible for transmitting Visceral leishmaniasis.

Key Research Contributions
Vector Biology, Insecticide Resistance and Susceptibility: Dr. Dinesh has conducted extensive studies on the Biology and susceptibility of sandflies to various insecticides. My research was instrumental in documenting widespread DDT resistance in Phlebotomus argentipes in Bihar and Nepal, which ultimately influenced policy changes, leading to the replacement of DDT with synthetic pyrethroids, such as alpha-cypermethrin, in indoor residual spraying (IRS) programs. Implementation of Alphacypermethrin resulted elimination of Kala -azar from India.

Botanicals as alternatives to Chemical Pesticides: I explored the potential of eco-friendly, biodegradable plant extracts as alternatives to synthetic chemicals. His work identified insecticidal properties in plants such as Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) and Clerodendrum infortunatum, identifying specific fractions (like diterpenoids) that are effective in killing sandfly larvae and adults.

Vector Ecology and Behavior: In my research, I mapped the peridomestic breeding and resting sites of sandflies, such as abandoned wells, cattle sheds, and vegetation. He also challenged previous dogmas regarding sandfly flight ranges, showing that females can travel up to 300 meters from their breeding sites, which is crucial for defining effective spray zones.


Epidemiological Mapping and GIS: I utilized Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing to map "hot-spots" and predict vector density based on environmental variables like vegetation index (NDVI), altitude, and humidity. This work supports targeted interventions for the elimination of Kala-azar.

Molecular Studies: We delved into the molecular mechanisms of resistance, such as the role of Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) in helping sandflies tolerate stress and detoxify insecticides.

Fellow of the Indian Society of Other Communicable Diseases (FISCD), recipient of the ICMR Senior Scientist Fellowship, and Nand Lal Kalra award in the field of Entomology.
