Prof S. A. Abbasi has been a full university professor since 1987 after being Head-in-charge of the Water Quality & Environment Division at the Centre for Water Resources, Kozhikode, during 1979-87. He was a Visiting-cum-adjunct Professor at California State University during 1984-1987, and has been a Visiting Professor at the universities of Minnesota, Florida, Las Vegas, California-Berkeley, Malaya and Al-Ahsa.From 2015 till 2024 he was Emeritus Professor at Pondicherry University and was then made a Distinguished Professor at UPES (University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun)

Married to Dr Naseema in 1978, Prof Abbasi has three daughters: The eldest Dr Tasneem Abbasi is a chemical-environmental engineer trained at the University of Surrey, Pondicherry University, and Anna University of Technology. Tarannum holds a BTech and an MS (BITS, Pilani). Tabassum has taken her masters and PhD in environmental engineering. The eldest and the youngest daughters are associate professors while the middle daughter works for Infosys.
