About

Desiree Wussler, MD, is an internal medicine and cardiology specialist currently training in interventional cardiology at Vancouver General Hospital, Canada. She graduated as a medical doctor (MD) from the Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg, Germany in 2016 and defended her doctoral thesis in 2019 in basic cardiovascular research with the grading "summa cum laude" from the University of Freiburg, Germany. For her thesis she was funded by the German Heart Foundation with the Kaltenbach Doctoral Fellowship and awarded the Albrecht von Haller Award of Swiss Society of Cardiology.

She trained in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at several institutions, both in Germany (University Heart Center Freiburg Bad Krozingen), Switzerland (University Hospital of Basel) and Canada (Vancouver General Hospital).

Her research in Clinical Cardiology focusses on the diagnosis, risk-prediction and early treatment of acute heart failure and myocardial infarction, cardiac biomarkers and sex-specific differences in cardiovascular disease. She authored and co-authored more than 130 scientific publications in peer-reviewed international journals, including first authorships in high-impact journals such as "Annals of Internal Medicine" and the "European Journal of Heart Failure".

She received several scientific awards, including among others the Otto Hess Trainee Award and the Albrecht von Haller Award of the Swiss Society of Cardiology. Her research on sex-specific differences in cardiovascular disease was funded by research grants of the Swiss Heart Foundation. She holds a research grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) for her Research on Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Interstitute under supervision of Prof. Jacqueline Saw.
