About
After completing my Internal Medicine Residency in India, I secured a Training Fellowship in Infectious Diseases through the Royal College of Physicians at Addenbrookes hospital, Cambridge, UK. I was awarded the MRCP and the diploma in UK Medical Practice (DipUKMP) during this period. After returning to India, I completed my 2-year National Board of Examinations (NBE) accredited FNB (Fellowship of National Board) course in Infectious Diseases at Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai and topped the country in FNB Exit examination. During my training, I secured the Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H) after completing the Global Health and Humanitarian Medicine Course through Médecins Sans Frontières(MSF) India (in collaboration with MSF-UK) in 2019. Further, I contributed to this course as a group moderator to help students prepare for DTM&H. I have completed an ESCMID-Sponsored Observership in Bone Infections from Oxford, UK.
I was recognised as an ‘Emerging leader in Infectious Diseases’, an honour granted to a handful of physicians working in the field of Infectious Diseases globally, by the International Society of Infectious Diseases in 2024.
I am a faculty/ teacher for the FNB (now DrNB) Infectious Diseases Training Programme, Mentor for the Clinical Infectious Diseases Fellowship and the co-ordinator of the Institutional Antimicrobial Stewardship program at Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai. I am presently working as a Senior Consultant in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Hinduja hospital, Mumbai.
I have gained credible experience in the Guideline Development Process. I am an Evidence Review Group Member for the International ESCMID Guidelines on Vaccination in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients and on the ESCMID Guidelines on the management of MDR Gram Negative infections. Earlier, I was an Evidence Synthesis Committee member for the COVID India Guidelines, which was published in ‘Clinical Epidemiology and Health’ journal.
I participated in the Public Consultation Phase for the development of international guidelines including the ‘ESCMID COVID-19 Living Guidelines: Drug treatment and clinical management’ and the ‘ESCMID Guidelines for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli’ developed by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
I am passionate about clinical research, with special interest in Antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship and TB diagnostics. My recent projects as a PI include the impact of rapid diagnostics on clinical outcomes and understanding the genomic characteristics and assessment of viable treatment options for Indian Carbapenem non-susceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. Additionally, I am the site PI for several clinical trials pertaining to AMR, including the national Phase 2 and Phase 3 study on the impact of cefepime-zidebactam in the treatment of MDR Gram-negative infections and the multi-national study on a novel antibiotic lock therapy (Minolock) to potentiate catheter salvage. I was site co-investigator in the SOLIDARITY trial, the global WHO-sponsored trial to assess antiviral treatment options in COVID-19, the results of which were published in the NEJM and later in the Lancet. We contributed to the national registry for Mucormycosis in COVID-19, the earliest large case series published in Emerging Infectious Diseases. Additionally, I am a co-investigator on many international projects on COVID-19. I was also invited to be an Independent external reviewer, reporting directly to the DSMB for a large vaccine trial conducted by the Serum Institute of India.
I have 54 publications (including chapters and articles published in reputed journals like NEJM, Lancet, Tuberculosis etc) and have presented my work in several conferences, both in India and abroad. I have won many awards and grants along the way, the most notable being the ‘Dr Vithalrao Nadgouda Best All India Annual Thesis Award’ for my Internal Medicine dissertation and Travel Grants to attend ECCMID every year from 2019-2023.
I am an invited member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases Society of India an Assistant Editor for the International Journal of infectious Diseases- Regions. Additionally, I have been invited as a reviewer for several pubmed-indexed journals including Clinical Microbiology and Infection, Lancet Infectious Diseases and Lancet Global Health: South East Asia.
I am actively involved in the inter and intra-departmental teaching activities and academics in the hospital. I have been an organizing member and lecturer in several national, regional and institutional teaching workshops and courses on infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship. As a strong proponent of antimicrobial stewardship, I am involved as a co-investigator in ICMR funded multi-centric studies on antimicrobial stewardship and in the CDC project on antimicrobial resistance.
