About
Dr. Athanasios Alexiou has a BSc in Applied Mathematics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics Algorithms and Mathematical Modeling in Biology, and a two-year Postdoc Research Fellowship in Neuroinformatics Applications from the Ionian University.
He is the Medical Director of Nexus Medical Technologies in Greece & Cyprus (representing NeXus Neurofeedback and Biofeedback devices from the Mind Media Europe Group), Head of Research and Education at Funogen Research Company in Greece, an Adjunct Professor at the University Centre for Research and Development at Chandigarh University in India and collaborates in various international projects with research teams from several countries.
Dr. Alexiou is a Fellow at the International Institute of Biomedical Science in the UK and is highly ranked in the Computational Biomedicine field. Notably, Dr. Alexiou has been listed among the top 2% of the world’s most-cited researchers, according to the annual Stanford University ranking 2025 (Main field clinical Medicine, Sub-field Neurology-Neurosurgery).
Dr. Alexiou's area of research is Computational Biomedicine with a special interest in developing novel mathematical models and algorithms in neurodegenerative diseases, Bayesian prognostic tools, and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods. He has also made significant contributions to the study of molecular mechanisms in infectious diseases, cancer biomarkers, the impact of nanotoxicity of agricultural biotechnology applications on human health, and the ethical implications of scientific research.
He serves as an Associate Editor for highly respected journals such as Frontiers in Genetics and Sociology (Section: ELSI - Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications) and Frontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics (Section: Mathematical Biology). He is also a Section Editor for Current Alzheimer Research, among others; he is the co-author of more than 300 high-impact publications and 6 patents filed; he is the co-editor of several books in well-known publishing houses; he has delivered many talks and presentations in international conferences and workshops; he participates in several international funded programs; he serves as a Scientific and Program Committee Member in several conferences and as a Reviewer/Member of the Editorial Board of international journals; he is supervising from diploma to Ph.D. theses and internships' programs; he has over 25 years of combined mentoring and educational experience with research, and innovation experience in life sciences.
