About

I am working as Professor of Pediatrics at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Rishikesh where I am Incharge of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Coordinator of DM Program in Pediatric Pulmonology and Pediatric Intensive Care. I have previously worked as Additional Professor and Head of Pediatrics and In-charge PICU at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna. I was substantive faculty at this newly commissioned institute of national importance since April 2013 and established pediatric services and PICU which is the biggest referral PICU in this part. I am guide and examiner for MBBS, MD-Pediatrics and DM Pediatric Pulmonology and Intensive Care, examiner for DNB (Pediatrics) and DNB (Pediatric Intensive Care) of National Board of Examinations and thesis evaluator for DM Pediatric Critical Care Programs. I am a pediatric critical care super-specialty teacher accredited by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) College of Pediatric Critical Care. I also did PG-diploma in hospital administration and pursuing certificate course in healthcare leadership and analytics from Indian Institute of Management and fellowship of ECMO Society of India.

After post-graduation i.e. DNB-paediatrics (2006) and PICU-fellowship (2008) in India, I worked in the UK as paediatric registrar and clinical fellow in PICU once my PG qualification was confirmed as equivalent in standards to the MRCPCH. I was selected for RCPCH-visiting-fellowship to observe at St Mary’s and GOSH London in 2016. Both the UK experiences significantly helped me in establishing and leading clinical services, academic curriculum and patient safety, back home.

Govt of India entrusted me to camp at outbreak site and support the state authorities in establishing a make-shift PICU at Muzaffarpur district during acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) outbreak in 2019 and later commissioning of the PICU there in 2020. I am leading the PICU capacity building and QI project for 15 other medical colleges of the state. Our AES project is supported by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and partnered with the INCLEN Trust International, Govt of Bihar, UNICEF and NIMHANS Bangalore. Institute has recently granted support for my innovation project (as principle investigator) to develop a remote-ICU-monitoring system. I am Co-PI for a rheumatic heart disease prevalence study supported by the ICMR.

During COVID-19 pandemic, I have been centrally involved in preparation and planning of hospital COVID services and published some interesting finding in children in the Lancet adolescent and children, The BMJ Case reports and Indian Journal of Pediatrics. I headed the IAP-ALS-BLS Group committee to update the guidelines on CPR during covid pandemic. I am involved in the Covid-vaccine-trial and PLACID-trial related to use of convalescent plasma in COVID-19. I am site PI for the pediatric-covid-19 registry of IAP and WHO. I am also a trainer for WHO & IAP leadership in QI and capacity building workshops. I am course director for eSanjeevani: IAP eBLS Foundation Course for newly admitted MBBS students in India.

I am author for more than 40 indexed publications, co-editor for two books, section editor for two books, author for 38 book-chapters, reviewer for 11 journals including BMJ, PLOS in Medicine, Frontiers and Medicine and served as editorial board member for journals and newsletters including journal of pediatric critical care and WFPICCS newsletter. I have presented more than 45 research papers/ posters in national and international conferences and delivered more than 200 talks/ lectures at national and 15 at international meetings. I have contributed to IAP parental guideline on Home care of child on oxygen and ventilation and part of Medical Emergency Management for School Children (MEMS)-Child Safety action-plan. I am serving as national coordinator of basic life support group of the IAP since 2019 and elected national-convenor of the IAP advance life support group for year 2023-24.
