Dr. Naif Taleb Ali, PhD, is an Assistant Professor, Hematology and Immunohematology Specialist, and Global Health Researcher whose work integrates hematology, laboratory medicine, epidemiology, evidence synthesis, and artificial intelligence to address health challenges in resource-limited, fragile, and conflict-affected settings. He holds a PhD in Hematology and Immunohematology from the University of Gezira, Sudan, and currently serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Science and Technology in Aden and the University of Lahej, Yemen. He has also held academic and healthcare leadership positions, including Head of Department and senior laboratory and hospital management roles.
Dr. Ali's research focuses on developing affordable, scalable, and clinically relevant diagnostic approaches for settings where conventional healthcare resources are constrained. His work combines systematic reviews and meta-analyses, diagnostic accuracy research, observational studies, laboratory medicine, and machine learning. His methodological expertise includes explainable artificial intelligence using XGBoost, Random Forest, SHAP, and LIME, as well as predictive modeling, model interpretation, risk stratification, and population-specific diagnostic thresholds. He also has extensive experience in advanced evidence-synthesis methodologies, including PRISMA 2020, PRISMA-DTA, MOOSE, HSROC and bivariate diagnostic models, meta-regression, network meta-analysis, QUADAS-2, PROBAST-AI, GRADE, and decision-curve analysis.
His research spans hematology, immunohematology, molecular hematology, transfusion medicine, diagnostic biomarkers, infectious diseases, maternal and women's health, autoimmune diseases, sickle cell disease, diabetes, cardiovascular and thrombotic risk, and health systems research. A central theme of his work is the translation of laboratory and epidemiological evidence into practical, low-cost diagnostic and clinical decision-support strategies for conflict-affected and humanitarian settings. His recent research has particularly examined hematological biomarkers, malaria, maternal health, autoimmune disease, diabetes, genetic disorders, and AI-assisted clinical decision support.
Dr. Ali has authored or co-authored more than 30 scientific publications, including research published in journals such as Lupus Science & Medicine, PLOS ONE, PLOS Global Public Health, BMJ Open, BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, BMC Medical Genomics, Conflict and Health, Human Mutation, and Frontiers in Public Health. His publications include systematic reviews and meta-analyses, diagnostic and observational studies, and research addressing healthcare challenges in conflict-affected populations.
He is also an active peer reviewer, with more than 55 completed reviews for over 20 international and regional journals across hematology, immunology, oncology, public health, laboratory medicine, infectious diseases, and women's health. He has supervised six MSc students and more than six BSc students and has served as an external examiner for postgraduate theses and research projects at Yemeni universities. His academic work is complemented by international research collaborations involving colleagues and institutions in Italy, Turkey, China, Sudan, and other settings.
His long-term research vision is to advance equitable, evidence-based, and technology-enabled healthcare by translating rigorous biomedical research into practical solutions for low-resource and conflict-affected populations. Through the integration of laboratory medicine, global health, evidence synthesis, and explainable AI, he aims to strengthen diagnostic capacity, improve clinical decision-making, and support health-system resilience in settings where the need for affordable and reliable healthcare innovation is greatest.
