About
I’m Shri Vishalini Rajaram (preferred name: Vishalini), a Ph.D. candidate in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Human Toxicology at the University of Iowa. My research focuses on functional changes in the oral microbiome during disease, especially the role of bacterial stress-response systems such as toxin-antitoxin modules. I work at the interface of computational biology, microbiome science, and systems toxicology to study host–microbe interactions using large-scale multi-omics data.
My work involves building and applying reproducible workflows to integrate metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, and metaproteomic datasets. I’m particularly interested in identifying functional microbial markers of disease progression and in using publicly available datasets to generate insights that are both biologically meaningful and clinically relevant.
Originally from a small town in South India, I bring a multidisciplinary perspective to my research and value scientific work that is rigorous, transparent, and applicable across fields. I am also involved in science communication initiatives and enjoy translating complex biological concepts into accessible formats for diverse audiences.
