Dr. Ajay Semalty is the Course Coordinator of India’s most popular SWAYAM MOOC- Academic Writing and working as a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, H.N.B. Garhwal University (A Central University) Srinagar (Garhwal), Uttarakhand for the last 22 years with total academic, research, and industrial experience of more than 23 yrs. He is also working as the University SWAYAM Coordinator, SPOC NPTEL Local chapter of Garhwal University. He is M. Pharm. (Pharmaceutics), MBA (Operations Management); Ph. D. (two: Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences), PDF Meijo University, Japan; recently, he has been included in the World's top 2 % Scientists (by Stanford University research, 2020 to 2025, 6 times). He has completed 11 research projects (and two are ongoing) funded by various agencies; He has published 100 papers, 11 books (including the best sellers “Academic Writing” and "Essentials of Pharmaceutical Technology" by BS Publishers, Hyderabad), and 3 patents (granted). He is a highly cited researcher (> 3000 citations) in the field (h index 28, i10 index 41). He has presented papers at more than 150 conferences; Awarded the Daiko Foundation Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship and was invited by Meijo University, Nagoya, Japan as a visiting scientist for research for FY 2011-12; Awarded the prestigious national Research Award by UGC, New Delhi, and Young Scientist Award of the year 2007 by Uttarakhand Council of Science & Technology (UCOST); Expert reviewer of Iceland Research Foundation Iceland; Israel Science Fund, Israel and Scientific Expert (REPRISE) for Ministry of Institution and University Research (MIUR), Italy, Elsevier Books; Member of The Asian Council of Science Editors, APTI and IPA; Editorial Board Member and Peer reviewer of various national and international reputed journals; supervised 30 M. Pharm research projects, 02 Ph D students and supervising 02 Ph.D. candidates.
Being UGC approved national panelist of resource persons for MMTTCs he has delivered more than 500 invited lectures (on OERs, academic writing, Indian Knowledge System, nanoparticle research, research methodology, research ethics, software in research, MOOC, blended/ flipped learning, research proposal writing, academic integrity, plagiarism, etc.) in various training programs in Faculty Development Centers (FDCs), MMTTCs erstwhile UGC-Human Resource Development Centres (HRDCs) and other institutions. He is also a Certified Microsoft Innovative Educator Master Trainer and has trained more than 1000 educators for digital, blended and flipped learning through ICT tools.
He has developed more than 200 hrs. of e-content for SWAYAM, SWAYAMPRABHA, edtech platforms and ARPIT courses. He has developed 22 online courses including two SWAYAM Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs): “Academic Writing” (listed in the top 30 world MOOCs and appreciated by PIB and MoE, GoI; ranked #1 in exam registration in 2019 and 2020) and “Industrial Pharmacy I” (First and only Pharmacy MOOC in India) with more than 97000 learners from more than 100 countries. He is developing two MOOCs presently.
Recently, he prepared the second online course entitled “Fundamentals of ICT Tools for School Teachers: Role of AI” for the Uttarakhand School Education Department and SCERT, launched 29/09/25. The first course for SCERT got an overwhelming response with more than 50000 enrolments of school teachers after launch on November 8, 2024.
His research interests include cyclodextrin and lipid complexes, Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), nanoparticles, and natural products for drug delivery like obesity and hair loss.
