About
Pawan Sharma earned his Ph.D. (Parasite Immunology/Microbiology) from C.D.R.I.-Lucknow / Panjab University-Chandigarh in 1980, and then served CDRI as Scientist till July 1986. He was a PDF at Research Institute of Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, CA, USA, & Visiting Scientist at Agouron Institute, La Jolla, CA. He served ICGEB, New Delhi (India) as a Sr. Res. Scientist, Feb 1989 - Aug 2011; his area of research being Medical Microbiology (TB & Malaria), Molecular Immunology & Cell Biology. He established at ICGEB, a first of its kind, tuberculosis aerosol challenge facility (TACF) for TB research in India. He has ~100 publications, in journals of international repute, namely, IMMUNITY, PNAS-USA, J Immunol, PLoS ONE, PLoS Pathogens, Infect Immun, JID, Cell Microbiol, Microbes Infect, Tuberculosis (Edin), Imm Cell Biol, IJMR, Sci Reports, etc.
From Sept 2011 to May 2018, he was a Senior Consultant-Healthcare with the North Eastern Region Biotechnology Program Management Cell (NER-BPMC) of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt of India; here, he contributed by conceptualising and implementing programmes for strengthening biomedical research, education & training, improving healthcare infrastructure & patient services, and implementing HRD programmes in NER.
From July 2018 to July 2019, he served as Visiting Research Professor at the College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara, Guwahati, where he contributed to teaching of Immunology and to strengthening ongoing research programmes there. Since January 2024, he has been serving IISER-Bhopal as Adjunct Professor.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (London) in 1983, and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) (Allahabad) in 2002. He also served as International Expert for the NIH-funded TB Vaccine Testing & Research Materials Contract program at Colorado State University, USA, 2005-10.
He has been the President of the Indian Immunology Society for two terms (2010-2012; 2012-2014), as well as its Vice President (2008-2010) & Secretary (2006-2008). He was honored with Senior Scientist Oration award by the Indian Immunology Society.
