About

I am a computational biologist who joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 2001 to establish a Bioinformatics R&D group. Over the years, I have built, trained, and mentored a highly interdisciplinary team within an IT industry setting, creating a world-class research group committed to excellence in both fundamental and translational research. Our work has focused on developing innovative algorithms for the analysis, visualization, and modeling of complex omics data, including genomics and metagenomics.

During more than two decades at TCS Research, I spearheaded several Public–Private Partnership projects involving leading National and International academic institutions, research organizations, and hospitals. I was among the early pioneers in India to initiate cutting-edge research in the niche fields of ‘Microbiome and Metagenomics’. My group has developed a range of algorithms and solutions with strong translational potential, including microbiome-based biomarkers for disease diagnosis, health monitoring, and novel strategies for applications such as bioremediation. The impact of this work is reflected in over 100 granted patents, in addition to numerous publications in peer-reviewed international journals.

Following my superannuation in August 2022, I continued to serve as an Advisor to Life Sciences Research at TCS until March 2026. I currently hold the AYUSH Distinguished Scientist Chair awarded by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. In this role, I mentor AYUSH clinicians and students in understanding Indian traditional knowledge systems through modern scientific approaches.

In addition, I serve as a Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Thiruvananthapuram. I am also an Adjunct Professor at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi and Indian Institute of Information Technology, Surat.

I have served and continue to serve on advisory bodies of several government agencies and premier academic institutions, including IITs, National Institute of Technology (NITs), IISERs, IIITs, Universities, and other research organizations. I have also contributed as an expert committee member for agencies such as Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), Department of Science and Technology (DST), and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), as well as for mission-mode projects supported by the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to the Government of India. Currently, I serve on the Academic and Scientific Advisory Boards of IISER Berhampur, the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB), and the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA).

I am an elected Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). I am a recipient of the TATA Innovista Award for developing innovative methodologies to predict the risk of diseases and disorders. I have also been featured in the compendium of “75 Women Engineers in India,” published by INAE under the aegis of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations. In addition, I have served as an Editorial Board Member of the international peer-reviewed journal Gut Pathogens.
