About
Dr. Parimal Sah, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Purnea College of Engineering, Purnea, Bihar, India, is an academic and researcher whose career has been dedicated to the field of photonics, optoelectronics, and integrated circuits. His passion for technology, particularly in photonics, has been a driving force behind his achievements and research contributions. With a strong foundation in education and an established career in academia, Dr. Sah is a leading figure in the development of integrated photonic devices, especially those utilizing Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) technology.
Academic Background
Dr. Sah’s academic journey began at RVS College of Engineering and Technology (RVSCET) in Jamshedpur, where he completed his Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Electronics and Communication Engineering in 2009. The foundational knowledge he acquired during this time set the stage for his future academic and research endeavors.
Upon completing his undergraduate degree, Dr. Sah pursued his Master of Technology (MTech) at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Durgapur in West Bengal, India, in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. His master’s thesis focused on 2D Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) Implementation in FPGA, which provided him with a solid grounding in digital signal processing and hardware design. This experience sparked his interest in the intersection of electronics and photonics, leading him to pursue more advanced studies in these fields.
Dr. Sah’s academic aspirations led him to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the Department of Electrical Engineering from 2012 to 2017. His doctoral research focused on Integrated Photonics Filters with Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) in Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) technology. Through his thesis, he explored the application of photonic bandpass filters in multimode SOI waveguides and demonstrated the potential for cascading sidewall gratings to fine-tune filter characteristics. His work on phase-shifted grating integrated with single-mode waveguides yielded a very high-quality factor, showcasing his ability to conduct cutting-edge research in integrated photonics.
Research Focus and Expertise
Dr. Sah’s research interests lie at the forefront of photonics and optoelectronics, specifically the development of integrated silicon photonic devices. His work is concentrated on active and passive components in photonics, including Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBR), Ring Resonators, Mach-Zehnder Interferometers (MZI), and Directional Couplers. He has also made significant strides in understanding non-linearity in Silicon, particularly in the realm of Raman Silicon Lasers, which has immense potential for developing more efficient photonic devices for communication and sensing.
His proficiency with a range of software tools has enabled him to effectively simulate, model, and optimize photonic devices. Some of the tools he has mastered include Lumerical FDTD, MEDICI, COMSOL, RSOFT, MATLAB, CADENCE, and FPGA. Dr. Sah is also skilled in LabVIEW programming, which he has used to handle laser and detector systems in laboratory settings. His hands-on experience with advanced laboratory equipment such as photolithography, e-beam lithography, ICP-RIE, metallization, and polishing further strengthens his research capability in device fabrication.
In his research lab, Dr. Sah has been involved in the characterization of lab-fabricated devices, including integrated optical filters, sensors, add-drop multiplexers, and optical switches. These efforts have solidified his standing as an expert in the field of integrated photonics.
Work Experience and Mentorship
Dr. Sah’s career in academia spans several years, during which he has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to both teaching and research. As a Teaching Assistant during his PhD at IIT Madras, he assisted in courses related to Solid State Devices, Electromagnetic Field Theory, and Network Systems. His teaching experience deepened during his tenure as an Assistant Professor at Bhagalpur College of Engineering, where he worked from January 2018 to December 2022.
At Bhagalpur College of Engineering, Dr. Sah taught several undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Digital Circuits, Microelectronics: IC Design and Fabrication, Fiber Optics Communication, Digital Hardware Design, Solid State Physics and Devices, Signal and System, Biomedical Instrumentation and Imaging, Digital Image Processing, and Higher Engineering Mathematics. His expertise and passion for teaching have earned him a reputation as a dedicated educator.
Dr. Sah’s mentorship abilities were further honed at IIT Madras, where he mentored students in the Advanced Photonics Lab for four semesters. He was actively involved in overseeing experiments such as the loss measurement of optical waveguides,
