About
Dr Manoj Kumar is a Research Associate-II in the Department of Hydrology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee. He is a dedicated environmental scientist with specialised expertise in wastewater treatment, constructed wetlands, and bioelectrochemical systems, including microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). His research significantly contributes to sustainable water management, energy recovery, and nature-based pollution mitigation strategies.
Dr Kumar earned his PhD in Environmental Science from the Central University of Gujarat in 2021. His doctoral research focused on developing a novel constructed wetland system enhanced with iron scraps and activated carbon to improve municipal wastewater treatment efficiency. He also holds an M.Phil. in constructed wetland-based wastewater treatment and an M.Sc. in Environmental Microbiology.
To date, Dr Kumar has published over 15 research papers in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, including Bioresource Technology, Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, and Science of the Total Environment. He has also contributed more than 17 book chapters and has served as editor or co-editor for several volumes published by the Royal Society of Chemistry and Elsevier Springer. He is the lead editor of the Springer book Integrated Bioelectrochemical-Constructed Wetland System for Future Sustainable Wastewater Treatment.
In addition to his publishing contributions, Dr Kumar actively serves as a peer reviewer and editorial board member for various international journals in the fields of environmental science and sustainability. He played a key role in developing the “Guidelines for Constructed Wetland Systems for Treatment of Sewage in India”, a national-level initiative under the Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy at IIT Roorkee.
Dr Kumar’s contributions have earned him multiple accolades, including the NESA Young Scientist of the Year Award (2021) and best oral presentation awards at several international conferences. Beyond research, he has been actively involved in student mentorship, laboratory instruction, and public engagement through National Service Scheme (NSS) activities and environmental awareness campaigns.
With a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, Dr Kumar's long-term vision is to design and implement nature-based, energy-efficient wastewater treatment technologies that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of clean water, sanitation, and climate action.
