About
I am Chhotu Kumar Keshri, working as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Mining and Rock Engineering at Luleå University of Technology (LTU), Sweden. My current research focuses on stress evolution in the underground Kiruna mine using stress‑inversion methodologies applied to focal‑mechanism data from mining‑induced seismicity.
Previously, I worked as a Project Scientist at the Seismology Observatory, CSIR‑NGRI, Hyderabad. I completed my Ph.D. at IIT Kharagpur under the supervision of Prof. William Kumar Mohanty. My doctoral research centered on earthquake engineering seismology, specifically site‑specific probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) and the development of ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) for the Indo‑Gangetic Plains (IGP), India.
I hold an M.Sc. Tech. in Exploration Geophysics and a B.Sc. (Honours) in Physics, both from the Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. My master’s thesis, completed at ONGC‑RCC Vadodara, was titled “3D Seismic Data Processing: A Case Study from the Cambay Basin, Gujarat, India.”
My research in seismology and seismic hazard assessment provides opportunities to evaluate the probability of ground‑motion levels associated with various return periods for different earthquake sources. As part of this work, I developed GMPEs using recorded accelerometer data from the IGP region during Himalayan earthquakes. I have participated in several conferences and am associated with international geoscience communities, including the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the Seismological Society of America (SSA).
My broad research interests lie in seismology, with specific focus areas including strong‑motion seismology, seismic hazard analysis, GMPE development, site‑response analysis, physics‑based numerical simulation of strong‑motion data for active fault zones, earthquake monitoring, ambient‑noise tomography, 3D seismic data processing, and multi‑hazard and risk assessment. I am also interested in machine learning and artificial intelligence applications in seismological data analysis.
