About
Dr. Jyoti Prakash currently holds the position of Scientific Officer (G) in the Advanced Carbon Materials Section at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai, India and Associate Professor, Homi Bhabha National Institute, Anushaktinagar Mumbai. He has made significant contributions to the development of advanced carbon materials and their applications in energy, sensing, and ballistic protection. Dr. Prakash served as a Scientific Officer in various capacities at BARC since 2006, and he enhanced his research profile as a Fulbright Postdoctoral Research Scholar at Arizona State University, USA, from 2018 to 2019 in collaborating with Prof. AM Kannan and Prof. Bruno Azeredo.
Dr. Jyoti Prakash’s research focuses on developing novel, highly sensitive, specific, and economical inorganic-organic hybrid materials for societal applications. Leveraging the superior properties of carbon/carbide nanostructures like CNTs, graphene, nanodiamonds, and silicon carbide, he has advanced materials with exceptional electrical, mechanical, and sensing capabilities. His achievements include oxidation-resistant silicon carbide coatings for accident-tolerant fuel tubes and CNT/polyethylene composites for ballistic-resistant jackets, resulting in an Indian patent and technology transfer. Additionally, his innovative MWCNT architectures enhanced biomedical and chemical sensors' performance, facilitating rapid disease detection and chemical sensing.
Dr. Jyoti Prakash has contributed over 85 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 2 patents, 90 conference presentations, and authored seven book chapters and reports. His achievements have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Young Associate from the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences (2023), the Best Oral Award at the e-workshop on Advances in Science & Technology of Graphene (2022), the Group Achievement Award for the delivery of Bhabha Kavach (2019), the Fulbright Nehru Postdoctoral Fellowship (2017), the Dr. R. L. Thakur Memorial Award (2016), and the Young Applied Scientist Award from the Department of Atomic Energy (2013). He is member of American Chemical Society (Membership Number:31751202), Life member of Indian Carbon Society, Society for Materials Chemistry (SMC) India (LM197) and Associate Royal Society of Chemistry.
The impact of Dr. J. Prakash's research extends beyond strategic applications, as his materials find practical use in societal applications such as ballistic-resistant jackets for the Armed Forces. His exceptional scientific contributions in advanced materials, composites, and biosensing technologies make him a leading researcher addressing pressing societal challenges.
