About
I am Dr. Swathi Balasubramanian, currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University College Dublin, Ireland, with a research focus on sustainable and low-carbon construction materials. My doctoral studies at Anna University, Chennai, India, focused on the “Influence of Nanomaterials on High-Performance Binary Blended Alkali-Activated Concrete”. During my Ph.D., I was awarded the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and later promoted to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) under the AICTE Doctoral Fellowship scheme (2021), which enabled me to conduct high-quality research on sustainable binders. Through this work, I explored the role of nanomaterials such as nano-silica and nano-alumina in enhancing strength, durability, and sustainability in alkali-activated systems.
My research extends to the practical application of innovative binders in infrastructure, particularly the development of eco-efficient, high-performance paver blocks for very heavy traffic conditions. This invention has been filed for patent protection under the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM), Government of India, underscoring its novelty, technological advancement, and potential for large-scale societal benefit.
In addition to material performance, I have investigated the fresh, mechanical, durability, and microstructural properties of advanced concretes, alongside their environmental impact assessment. My broader aim is to support the decarbonization of the construction industry by promoting the use of industrial by-products and agricultural residues in future concretes.
Throughout my research journey, I have been supported by prestigious funding schemes in India, including the AICTE Doctoral Fellowship (2021–2025) and the Post Graduate Scholarship for GATE-qualified candidates during my Master’s programme. I was placed third in my undergraduate studies and recognized with the Student Excellence Award. My work has been published in reputed international journals of high impact and visibility.
