About
Saugata Hazra, PhD, is a Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (Department of Biosciences & Bioengineering). Trained as a biochemist and biophysicist with a specialization in structure-based drug design, Dr. Hazra leads an interdisciplinary research program addressing mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). His laboratory studies enzymes that underpin resistance and essential bacterial pathways, including peptidoglycan synthesis and folate biosynthesis, using an integrated toolkit of protein crystallography, enzymology, biophysical assays, computational biology, molecular dynamics, virtual screening, and macromolecular interaction analyses. The Hazra Lab combines structural, biochemical and computational approaches to dissect catalytic divergence, elucidate structure–function relationships, and guide the discovery of inhibitors and diagnostics with novel mechanisms of action. Current projects emphasize the characterization of pathologically important bacterial proteins to inform rational antibiotic design and translational strategies to counteract drug resistance. Dr. Hazra is committed to bridging fundamental enzymology with practical therapeutics development and to training the next generation of scientists in interdisciplinary methods for tackling AMR.
