About
Dr. P. Suresh Kumar, horticulturist, with the specialization in postharvest technology, is currently serving as Principal Scientist at ICAR- National Research Centre for Banana, Trichy, Tamil Nadu. During his tenure, he has pioneered in the area of starch extraction and modification from banana, development of functional foods including low glycaemic food products. He has developed technologies for downstream utilization of banana biomass for the extraction of fibre, bio-active compounds, dietary fibre, pectin, low sodium pickles and its industrial applications. He is a member of the team that exported Grand Naine bananas to Europe and Nendran bananas to gulf and London markets through Ocean voyage. He has expertise in innovations and improvisation of various processed products platforms and developed common incubation centre under PMFME for grooming entrepreneurs.
During his tenure at ICAR- NIASM, Maharashtra, lead the team in identifying water saving strategies and planting techniques under hard terrain conditions to mitigate abiotic stressors. Dragon fruit and Date palm were introduced and technologies were provided for enhancing their productivity and utility. At ICAR Research Complex for NEH region, AP centre, Basar, Arunachal Pradesh, he was instrumental development of products from traditional fruits like taktir including bamboo and pineapple.
He has published more than 90 research publications, 45 book chapters and authored eight books. He has guided 18 students for their Masters programme in Food Science. He has been the recipient of Lal Bahadur Shastri Outstanding Young Scientist Award-2018 (LBSOYSA- 2018) of ICAR during July 2019 and Shri. D.P. Ghosh Memorial young scientist Award 2020, IAHS, New Delhi. Received young scientist award and best oral and poster presentation awards from different societies. He underwent advanced training on Biomolecules at Michigan State University, USA. Currently, He is involved in developing export standards for traditional banana varieties like Red banana and Ney Poovan for distance markets including Europe. Besides, he uses cross-disciplinary approaches and various in-vitro and in-vivo models to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms beyond the nutritional and processing functionality of food and food ingredients.
