About

Dr. Piyush Rai (DOB:06/02/1966) is Professor and Ex- Head, Department of Mining Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi and Former Director, International Center of Excellence in Mining Safety and Automation (iCEM), Ahmedabad.

He did his B.E. in Mining Engineering from the MBM University, Jodhpur (the erstwhile M.B.M. Engineering College, University of Jodhpur, Jodhpur) in the year 1987 securing “Second Rank” in his class. He did his M.Tech. and Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from erstwhile Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (I.I.T. (BHU) now) securing “First Rank and BHU Gold Medal” in his Masters Course.
Prof. Rai served the Tata Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (TISCO) as Assistant Mining Engineer in the underground coal mines of Jamadoba group of collieries for 2-years. He also worked with Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML) as R&D Engineer for almost 1 -year.

Having keen interest in the academics & research activities, he joined the Department of Mining Engineering, IIT (BHU) (erstwhile, IT, BHU) as Lecturer in the year 1993 and was elevated to Full- Professor in 2010. He has total professional experience of more than 32 years out of which, over 29 years is in teaching, research and educational administration and about 3 years industrial experience in reputed organizations [Tata Steel (erstwhile Tata Iron & Steel Company Limited ) and Bharat Earth Movers limited (BEML)].

He also possesses vast exposure of working in Foreign universities. He worked as Visiting Professor in (i) University of Alaska Fairbanks, USA, (ii) Lulea University of Technology, Sweden and (iii) Chonnam National University, South Korea (2-times). Additionally, he has visited various countries for serious professional assignments, such as delivering invited guest lectures, delivering Keynote addresses, conducting Ph.D Examinations, Licentiate exams in several universities as External Specialist, Discussion Leader , technical consultancy , R&D, teaching and consultancy assignments etc. He has to his credit, 16 overseas visits, in a number of countries, to accomplish the said professional assignments.
He specializes in the subject areas of Production, productivity, and economic evaluation of Heavy Earth Moving Machines (HEMM), Advanced Mechanization and Automation, Rock fragmentation by drilling & blasting, Mining methods (both surface and underground) etc.




Prof. Rai has published over 140 research publications in various international/national Journals and Sem. / Conf. / Symp. till date and has supervised over 33 Masters (M.Tech.) level dissertation, about 75 B.Tech level dissertations and 11- Ph.D thesis (7-Awarded; 4-ongoing). He has completed several R&D and Consultancy assignments both in India and Abroad.
Prof. Rai is the Member Apex Committee to R&D Board of Coal India Limited (CIL), Member, Board of Governors, Valliamai Engg. College, Anna University, Chairman Board of Studies (BoS), Dept. of Mining Engineering, Bikaner Technical University. He has been the Chairman, Technical Sub-Committee, Standing Scientific Research Committee (SSRC), Ministry of Coal (MoC), New Delhi, Member, Apex Committee, of the SSRC, MoC, Member, Technical Sub-Committee, SSRC, Ministry of Coal (MoC); Member, Academic and Research Monitoring Committee, of various Universities and Institutes in India and abroad. His name is included in the panel of referees for INSA, CSIR, DST, UGC, Institution of Engineers (India). He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers, since the year 2006.
Dr. Rai visited USA (3-times), the Philippines (3-times), Sweden (4-times), South Korea (4-times), Norway (1-time), China(1-time) and Iran (1-time) for serious professional assignments.
