Indian Institute of Technology Madras
About
Sivakumar Subramanian earned a distinguished Doctor of Philosophy from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), for his pioneering research on gas turbine sealing flows and rotordynamics, under the supervision of Prof. A. Seshadri Sekhar and Prof. B.V.S.S.S. Prasad. Prior to this, he obtained a Master of Technology from IITM and a Bachelor of Engineering from the Madurai Kamaraj University. He continued with IITM as a Post-doctoral Researcher, wherein he successfully led the development of the next-generation aero turbine starter technology for jet engines in collaboration with GE Aviation, under the mentorship of Prof. B.V.S.S.S. Prasad. His broader area of interest includes mechanical design; rotordynamics and vibration; tribology and fluid flow with an emphasis on rotating machinery and energy-related system and components, including seals. As a lead author, he has contributed over 20 research articles at renowned conferences and refereed journal publications, including a patent on turbomachinery seals. He has won several awards that include the “Institute Day Prize” (Institute Research Award in recognition of quality and quantity of the research Work done during Ph.D.), the “IITM Mechanical Engineering Departmental Shield” and the “Alumni Day Prize” (Institute Silver Medal for the best Ph.D. Thesis). His research work was also nominated for the National awards that include the Indian National Academy of Engineering for the best Ph.D. Thesis, and the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award for the technological innovation on gas turbine sealing technology. Besides, he received several other awards including “Best Poster Award”, “CSIR Foreign Travel Award”, “IITMAANA Travel Award” and "Boeing Travel Grant” for dissemination of research findings at research forums worldwide. As an invited expert peer reviewer, he contributes to scientific forums, such as ASME, IMechE, APS and others. Presently, he is engaged as a Principal Scientist within the Centre for Battery Engineering and Electric Vehicles, IITM. He is also a life member of the Indian Society for Technical Education.
