Dr. Mahesh Bhatt is a surgeon, writer, public health consultant, and researcher who has been practicing medicine for the last three decades in Dehradun (Uttarakhand), India. With over two decades of experience in Public Health and Hospital and Healthcare Systems Management in Government, Non-Government, and Corporate organizations, he is associated with various academic, scientific, and social organizations and institutions involved in research, education, and social development. His research interests are health literacy, health promotion, spirituality, the spiritual dimension of health, climate change and health, bioethics, and their role in public health and healthcare systems. His work on thought processes and their ecosystem in the human brain and the function of spiritual thought processes and spirituality in various thoughts of religion, culture, philosophy, and science created a paradigm shift in understanding and defining spirituality in the context of evolutionary biology and neurobiology for broader implications on health, happiness, and well-being. He is the author of ‘Spiritual Health,’ ‘Spirituality: Neurobiology at Our Best,’ ‘The Inquisitive,’ and ‘Nithalla Chintan,’ and ‘Muktkanthai,’ two poetry collections in Hindi. His latest book on the COVID-19 pandemic, “The Year 2020 – Corona and Chaos,” was published by Ukiyoto Publications in July 2022 and translated into French, German, and Spanish.
Dr. Mahesh Bhatt has published and presented research papers at various international conferences on spirituality and spiritual health in the context of public health and medicine. His work on spiritual health as the fourth dimension of health and its role as a tool in preventing physical, mental, and social aspects of health is vital in public health, healthcare delivery, and management. He worked as Joint Director of Health in the Uttarakhand Government (India), Chief Medical Superintendent of Combined Medical Institute (CMI) Hospital, Dehradun (India), Principal of Doon Paramedical College, Dehradun (India), Senior Surgeon at Doon and Coronation Hospitals, and elected president of Vigyan Bharti (Uttarakhand Chapter) 2017-2021. He was elected to the Practice Standard Committee of the International Health Literacy Association (IHLA) for 2022-2024. He is the Chair of the Policy and Advocacy Group of IHLA. Dr. Bhatt is a member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), the Indian Public Health Association (IPHA), the World Medical Association (WMA), the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE), Society for Theory and Research on Salutogenesis (STARS), Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH), International Network for the Study of Spirituality (INSS) and the Scientific and Medical Network. He has worked with various national and global academic, research, and professional organizations in different capacities.
He is the managing director and CEO of MMBSHS Trust, a volunteer-driven charitable trust with an organizational strategy of not taking any external financial grants, working on health education, health literacy, community health, and public health research.
