About
I am a radiation oncologist with special expertise in Neuro Radiation Oncology and high precision radiation oncology. Beginning the training in radiation Oncology in a basic Telecobalt unit of Bangalore Medical College & research Institute in 2007 and currently being a part of Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, nation’s premiere radiation oncology Centre, over the past two decades, I have been trained, associated with and currently an integral part of one of the best Neuro-Oncology management teams
I obtained DMRT (2009) (post graduate Diploma in radiotherapy) from the BMCRI, MD & senior residency (2012) from CMC, Vellore and DNB in Radiation Oncology from SGPGI, Lucknow (2012).
With special interest in Neuro oncology, I pursued a dedicated Clinical-research Fellowship (2012-2014) in Neuro-Oncology at the Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, trained in advanced Neuro Oncology, the research during fellowship included analysis of the SCRT trial, which was presented at various international platforms and published in medical literature of high impact factor (such as JAMA Oncology).
I joined the department of Radiation Oncology at the regional cancer centre in Bangalore, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (Aug 2014), which is also the State cancer institute and served close to a decade. During this period my Neuro Oncology work was in collaboration with NIMHANS (especially for Brainstem Gliomas in Children) and other centers for multidisciplinary evidence based clinical/research work.
Following the WFNO meeting in Zurich in 2017, I was an observer to the Centre for Proton therapy (CPT) at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland, the world’s first Pencil beam scanning (PBS) facility and later attended their unique, world renowned, PSI Winterschool Proton symposium in 2018 for formal training certificate. A European School of Oncology travel grant in 2018, helped me in interacting with world leaders in Neuro Oncology in Milan, Italy to show case my collaborative work in radiosurgery to the doyen of SRS, Prof Michael Brada and our collaborative work on molecular genetics in Glioblastoma with Neuro Oncology basic research leaders such as Prof Monika Hegi
In 2023 I underwent a formal hands-on training in Proton therapy through a UICC technical Fellowship in CNS and Paediatric high precision radiation oncology and Proton therapy at the Miami cancer Institute, in Baptist health South Florida under the guidance of Dr Minesh Mehta and Dr Matthew Hall, both known globally for their significant contribution to adult and paediatric Proton therapy, respectively. This technical clinical-research fellowship enabled me to work, interact and collaborate with their physicians and also opened opportunity for future multi-institutional and global collaboration. During this period, I also interacted with Dr Nancy Mendenhall and Dr Daniel Indelicato, global leaders of proton therapy from University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute (UFPTI). In the year 2024, through a national AROI grant for technology transfer, I pursued a fellowship in Albert Einstein- Montefiore medical systems and the New York Proton Centre (NYPC). NYPC is a world renowned Proton therapy facility, of MSKCC/Mount Sinai/Montefiore systems, treating the largest number of patients in North America, performing cutting edge Proton therapy research in FLASH, SFRT and Leptomeningeal disease (to name a few). I had opportunity of interacting with global leaders such as Prof Charles Simone, Dr Arpit Chhabra, Dr Chandan Guha and others and this enabled an opportunity to look at prospective multi-Centre collaborations to advance Proton research. I joined the Neuro Oncology Cancer Management team as Senior Consultant of Radiation Oncology in March 2023.
APCC is South east Asia’s first modern Proton therapy, treating over 2500 cases since 2019, of which about 40-45% constitute Neuro Oncology, annually we treat close to 250 Neuro Oncology cases, children (from infants aged 18 months) and adults with modern proton therapy, carefully selected from a large number of clinical requests (>4 times) after a thorough, stringent MDT for each case. Annually, we also treat about 100 cases on conventional photons with Tomotherapy. Holistic clinical care (OP, IP, Proton/Photon therapy planning and execution, Proton peer review, department research, participation in national and international education/conference as Faculty), presentation of our results at various world platforms/ national and international conferences.
APCC being the first Proton Centre for south east Asia, gets international referrals from neighboring countries, providing an opportunity for international collaboration for continued education and information exchange.
