Since 2013 Dr Simonetta Viviani is an independent scientific advisor on vaccine research, epidemiology and public health. She has various collaborations with vaccine manufacturing companies, academia and non-profit institutions. She was previously (2010-2012) Associate VP & Head Dengue Vaccine Clinical Development Program at Sanofi Pasteur, Lyon, France. From 2005 to 2010 she was director of Vaccine Development at the Meningitis Vaccine Project (MVP) located in Ferney-Voltaire, France, a partnership between WHO and the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), with goal to eliminate epidemic meningitis from sub-Saharan Africa. From 2002 to 2005 she was medical director at Berna Biotech, Bern, Switzerland. From 1997 to 2002, she was associate director of the clinical research department at Chiron Vaccines in Siena, Italy. From 1995 to 1997 she was posted as Epidemiologist at the Hepatitis Unit at the UK Medical Research Council in The Gambia attached to The Gambia Hepatitis Intervention Study, a project of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO), Lyon, France, aimed to prevent infection, chronic carriage and primary liver cancer by Hepatitis B universal vaccination. Dr Viviani started her career as family doctor in rural area of Tuscany, Italy and has later worked for various public health and epidemiology projects in Italy, Zimbabwe, Brazil and Guinea Bissau. Her experience in vaccine development, clinical research and policy includes paediatric vaccines, vaccines against Hib, pertussis, measles, influenza, HIV, dengue, meningitis, pneumococcal disease, hepatitis B, leptospirosis, polio, SARS-Cov2 vaccines and she has published in these fields: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3652-5082. Dr. Viviani received a Medicine and Surgery Degree from Siena University, Italy, as well as postgraduate degrees in Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health and Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Laboratory. She holds a two-year postgraduate training in Field Epidemiology awarded jointly by the CDC, Atlanta, USA, and the Italian “Istituto Superiore di Sanità”, Rome, Italy. She holds the Italian National Abilitation (Abilitazione) to the Medical and Surgery Practice and she was listed as scientific expert by the French MISRE (Ministère de l’Einsegnement supérieur, de la Recherche et de l’Innovation) from 2018 to 2020.
