Professor. Karmakar M.K is the Director of Paediatric Anaesthesia at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin in Hong Kong. Professor. Karmakar’s area of research interest include regional anesthetic techniques in adults and young children and in particular thoracic paravertebral block, spinal sonography, ultrasound guided central neuraxial blocks and local anesthetic pharmacology. Professor Karmakar is internationally recognized for his research on regional anesthesia in both adults and children. His research has defined the sonoanatomy of the spine and has described real-time ultrasound guidance for central neuraxial blocks (epidural injections). He has also been at the forefront of research on paravertebral blockade and its use for anesthesia and analgesia. He has also demonstrated that paravertebral blockade can reduce chronic pain and improve health related quality of life after major breast cancer surgery. Professor Karmakar has also pioneered many novel techniques of delivering peripheral nerve blockade.
Professor. Karmakar has published extensively in various high impact peer review journals, been invited to speak at numerous international meetings around the world, been a faculty of countless international workshops, and has lectured as a visiting professor at various reputable international universities; such as Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York; Penn State Milton S Hershey Medical Center, Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey; University of Barcelona, Spain; Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia; Medical University of Vienna, Austria; UCSD, San Diego, USA and Western University, Ontario, Canada. He has also authored numerous book chapters and co-edited several reference textbooks of regional anesthesia. Professor Karmakar has supervised three PhD thesis to date and has trained several fellows from around the Asia-Pacific region on regional anesthesia. He has been a recipient of several competitive and non-competitive grants. Professor Karmakar has been hosting the issps (International Symposium on Spine and Paravertebral Sonography for Anesthesia and Pain Medicine) annually in Hong Kong since 2009. Today it is the premier meeting on the subject and attended by anesthesiologists and pain physicians from around the globe. Professor Karmakar has also been involved in the organization of numerous international conferences. He is currently the Scientific Convener of the Asia Oceanic Society of Regional Anaesthesia (AOSRA) and the immediate past president of the Asian Society of Paediatric Anaesthesiologist’s (ASPA). Dr. Karmakar currently serves as an editorial board member of the Journal of Paediatric Anesthesia, Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, and is a reviewer for several other major peer reviewed journals in anesthesiology.
