About
Dr. Kataria is a medical oncologist at the National Cancer Institute - AIIMS (NCI-AIIMS), India.
She was raised in a community where girls weren't allowed to attend school and were married off at a young age. However, she received scholarships to pay for her tuition and became a doctor to find better treatment options for cancer patients after losing her father to lung cancer.
She topped the nationwide entrance exam to get into the D.M. program at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. She also topped the final D.M. exit exam.
As an early career faculty member, she is responsible for developing the gynecologic oncology program at NCI-AIIMS. Her research focus is on finding cost-effective alternatives for common cancers like cervical cancer in low—and middle-income countries (LMICs) and leading the research program in gynecologic oncology at NCI-AIIMS.
She successfully conducted a randomised trial as part of her D.M. dissertation.
She currently has two intramural and one extramural grant to support her ongoing research projects.
She is the principal Investigator for the following investigator-initiated trials (funded).
1. The first trial focuses on locally advanced cervical cancer. It aims to test three consolidation chemotherapy regimens to identify the most effective regimen for a subsequent randomized clinical trial.
2. The second trial aims to screen oral chemotherapy drugs as a maintenance option for patients with persistent/recurrent/metastatic cervical cancer who have not progressed on first-line platinum-based chemotherapy.
3. The third study is to evaluate HPVctDNA as a prognostic and predictive biomarker in locally advanced cervical cancer.
Under the mentorship of her senior colleague, Dr. Raja Pramanik, she leads the OPD services for hereditary cancers, genetic counselling, and testing at NCI-AIIMS.
She received the young investigator travel award for the 2024 GCIG 1st Cervical Cancer Consensus Conference—Clinical Research (CCCC-CR). She actively contributed to the manuscript writing for the upcoming GCIG consensus statements on clinical research in cervical cancer.
She has been awarded the ESMO-ICF Clinical Unit visit fellowship for eight weeks at the Comprehensive Clinical Trials Unit (CCTU) at University College London, part of the Institute of Clinical Trials and Methodology (ICTM) under the mentorship of Dr. Hakim-Moulay Dehbi, Head of Statistics at CCTU. This experience will allow her to learn more about early-phase clinical trials. This knowledge will enable her to conduct early-phase clinical trials for testing new drugs and molecules in the treatment of cervical cancer in her home country, where such trials are currently limited.
She is also one of the mentees for the ESMO Virtual Mentorship Program 2024-2025, where her mentor, Dr. Helene Linardou, will guide her to achieve her professional goals.
She is also developing new research areas within the AIIMS, New Delhi medical oncology department, and NCI-AIIMS, Jhajjar. This task involves promoting patient advocacy, engagement, and patient-reported outcomes alongside her current responsibilities. The aim is to incorporate these aspects into future studies. She has already created a timeline with strategic goals to ensure better representation of patient advocates and to address patients' expectations in upcoming clinical trials.
