About

With a Ph.D. in Agricultural Chemicals from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi (1991), Dr. Nutan Kaushik is a professional with extensive experience of over 35 years in R&D and over 20 years in PG teaching in the field of biotechnology, plant protection, natural products , analytical chemistry and agriculture policy. As head of R & D research group she has been involved in project development and management, laboratory management, supervision and teaching of post graduate , Ph. D. students and researchers, training of other researchers, publication and grant writing. Her important areas of work are analytical and natural product chemistry, fish waste valorisation, development of microbial and botanical pesticides, study pesticides residue in plants and soils, metabolism of pesticides in plants, development of pest management modules and their demonstration at farmer’s field, agriculture policy, climate change and biowaste utilization.

She has developed several products viz. microencapsulated protein hydrolysate from fish processing waste, fish feed, gelatin from skin and bones, ready to cook soup based on fish protein hydrolysate , gelatin based meat balls, botanical and mictobila biopestide development etc. . She has developed protocols for efficient quantitative estimation of fatty acids, glucosinolate, azadirachtin, withaferin, tylo alkloids, chlorophytum saponins and pesticide residues by GLC, HPLC and spectrophotometric methods. She has also standardized Half-seed method for estimation of fatty acids in Brassica seeds. Under chemo typing activity her efforts has led to the identification of several chemotypes of Neem, Berberis, Ocimum, Asparagus, Chlorophytum, Withania, Tylophora, Karanja, Gymnema and Jatropha having high ai / high oil content and isolation of new bioactive compounds.

She has worked as visiting scientist in several international universities in USA, Germany, France, Australia, Spain, Norway, Tunisia, Netherlands etc. as visiting scientist. She was USDA Cochran Fellow at Michigan State University, USA; Nuffic Fellow at Wagingen University, Netherlands; DBT-CREST Fellow at University of California, Davis, USA; and DAAD Research Ambassador She has handled more than 50 projects as PI or Co-PI including 18 international projects EU, USAID,UNEP, Indo-German, DAAD, Indo-French, Indo-Australia, Indo-US, Indo-Spanish, Indo-Norway, and Indo-Tunisia widely travelled in 35 countries.

She has guided 20 Ph.D scholars and more than 50 Masters and undergraduate students. She has served as guest editor of many prestigious journals such as Phytochemistry Review, Current Medicinal Chemistry, Frontiers in Fungal Biology, Heliyon etc.

She has published more than 90 papers in reputed journals with combined impact factor of more than 500 and filed 27 patents. Developed several technologies viz. Bollcure Biopesticide (commercialized to 3 Indian and 1 US company), Bionematicide (commercialized to Spanish company), developed several variety of Brainca juncea and B.napus, Microbial antifungal formulation, fish processing waste valorisation into protein hydrolysate and gelatin, functional food and protein enriched soup, meatball, technology for induction of agarwood production by artificial infection, IPM packages, climate smart agriculture practices etc.

Bollcure Biopesticide was breakthrough research by utilizing leaver of eucalyptus for development of biopesticide.

She has been awarded Best BIRAC Project by BIRAC, DAAD- Research Ambassador 2010, Bharat Jyoti Award and more recently BioAg Asia Award 2022 special achievement award. She has been recognized as She is top 75 women chemist in India by Royal Society of Chemistry, UK. She has also been awarded various prestigious international fellowships like USDA Chochran fellowship, NUFFIC fellowship, UNESCO fellowship, DBT-CREST fellowship etc. She has served as Member of Expert Review Committee and Member of Task Force of BIRAC and DBT.
