Research Title: Realistic Biometric Clones Using AI For Privacy In Metaverse

Ms. Palak Verma is a Prime Minister Research Fellow (PMRF) under the scheme of Govt. of India. Presently, she is pursuing a Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Harkeerat Kaur in the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department at the Indian Institute of Technology Jammu (IIT Jammu), India.

Research Brief:
As an emerging paradigm for the next-generation Internet, the metaverse aims to provide a completely immersive and self-sustaining virtual shared space where people can interact and engage in a variety of activities. The term “Metaverse” is a fusion of “meta” and “verse”, representing a new realm created by the convergence of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). The popularity of the metaverse has grown during the COVID-19 pandemic, as more people turned to online platforms for work and entertainment. Within this virtual world, people can buy and sell virtual assets using cryptocurrency, meet up with friends, explore buildings, purchase goods, and attend events. Recent advancements in extended reality (XR), artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain have paved the way for the metaverse to become a forthcoming reality. However, privacy invasions and security breaches pose significant obstacles to its widespread adoption. Users encounter the inherent challenge of upholding personal privacy and safeguarding their biometric data, as it holds paramount importance for their identity. To address these concerns, innovative approaches that combine AI and biometric cloning techniques can be employed to create realistic yet privacy-preserving clones within the metaverse. Body scanning, which threatens personal privacy and sovereignty, can be mitigated by utilizing digital twins or clones that connect the physical and digital world. These digital twins enable the safe processing, storage, and transmission of proxy biometrics, minimizing the risk to the user’s personal information in the event of a security breach. Additionally, the potential for generating multiple artificial, yet natural looking clones serves to augment privacy within the confines of the metaverse. Leveraging biometric cloning techniques holds the potential to enhance privacy protection, benefiting both individuals and society as a whole.
