A. Personal Statement
I hold the position of Staff Scientist in the department of radiation oncology, specializing in the study of immunomodulatory changes linked with use of different forms of energy treatments such as ionizing radiation, microwave and ultrasound for their potential use in cancer therapy. My academic background spans across various domains within cancer biology, with a particular emphasis on metabolism and immune-modulation research. My training and research skills in radiation biology, tumor metabolism and tumor immunobiology drive my current research interest in evaluating different energy-based treatment modalities which include Focused ultrasound therapy, Radiotherapy, Irreversible electroporation for treatment cancer.
My on-going research is an innovative use of “Sound Energy for cancer treatment using our indigenously developed Focused Ultrasound Platform Technology- Acoustic priming unit (APT, Montefiore Innovations), which is being pioneered at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Our preclinical findings show a promise against breast cancer, the most prevalent cancer in women and the leading cause of cancer death in women in worldwide. Besides breast, our early results with this treatment approach could also prove useful against other difficult to treat cancers such as prostate, skin, bone, and pancreatic cancers. I am driving the pre-clinical studies for treatment of breast cancer using a unique non-invasive, sound energy-based platform technology – “Focused Ultrasound (FUS)”. I have been able to establish the foundational groundwork for the proposed research that will be tested in clinical trials for its application in clinical settings.
Additionally, I have effectively managed project administration duties such as staffing, research protocol adherence, and budgeting. Through collaboration with fellow researchers, I have generated numerous peer-reviewed publications stemming from each project. These experiences underscore the importance of regular communication among team members and the necessity of crafting a pragmatic research plan, timeline, and execution.
In summary, I possess the requisite expertise, leadership capabilities, and motivation essential for executing the proposed research project effectively.
Some current or recent research projects to mention:
1. “Use of therapeutic focused ultrasound for the immune-priming, in-situ and ex-vivo vaccine effect for breast cancer”, Radiation Oncology Department at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. (One manuscript submitted and second under preparation)
2. Collaborative project with Dr. Shu-Ping Wang, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Academia Sinica, Nankang, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. on the work titled “The Dual Roles of Tamoxifen in Breast Cancer-mediated Immune Modulation via Inducing Type I Interferon Signaling and CEACAM1-dependent Immunosuppression”. (Manuscript under revision, Journal: Science Advances).
3. Development of novel applications of therapeutic ultrasound for tissue regeneration and immune modulation for various stress, diseases (cancer and non-cancer) and hormesis. (working on some patents).
