Professor Chiranjib Chakraborty is the JC Bose Chair Professor in the School of Life Science and Biotechnology at Adamas University, Kolkata, India, and the Director of the university's Center of Excellence for Advanced Medical Bioinformatics and Artificial Intelligence. The Chair, named after the eminent Indian scientist Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, recognizes distinguished scientific leadership and sustained contributions to research. Since 2014, Professor Chakraborty has also served as Research Director in Bioinformatics, in the capacity of Advisory Professor, at the Institute of Skeletal Aging, Hallym University, South Korea. Before joining Adamas University, he held Professor position at Galgotias University and Associate Professor position at VIT University, India. He has served as a full professor for more than twelve years and was subsequently appointed Chair Professor and JC Bose Chair Professor.
Professor Chakraborty is an established leader in AI-enabled biomedical and global health research. His work integrates artificial intelligence, medical bioinformatics, computational biology, and translational medicine to address important problems in infectious diseases, immunoinformatics, non-coding RNAs, precision medicine, disease modelling, and therapeutic development. With over 29 years of research experience, including four years in industrial research and development, he has built a program distinguished by methodological innovation, international collaboration, and translational relevance. He also brings approximately 23 years of teaching experience and more than 15 years of academic editorial service. He has supervised four Ph.D. scholars and mentored numerous B.Tech., M.Tech., and M.Sc. research projects.
His publication record includes more than 378 SCI/SCIE- and Scopus-indexed biomedical articles, five authored books, and two edited volumes. His work has appeared in leading journals, including Nature, Nature Medicine, The Lancet, The Lancet Neurology, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, The Lancet HIV, The Lancet Global Health, JAMA Neurology, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Drug Resistance Updates, Molecular Therapy, Molecular Therapy - Nucleic Acids, and Theranostics. According to the metrics, his publications have received 30331 Google Scholar citations, with an h-index of 76 and an i10-index of 264. His research portfolio has a cumulative journal impact factor of 4023.2, an average impact factor of 10.64, and an average of 80.24 citations per paper. He has developed more than 33 technologies; 23 patents have been granted, comprising 19 international and four Indian patents, with patent applications filed for a further 15 technologies.
Professor Chakraborty's editorial leadership spans more than 15 years. He currently serves as an Editor of Infection, Genetics and Evolution and as an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Pharmacology and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology. His previous editorial appointments include Academic Editor of iScience, Editor of Current Microbiology, and Editorial Board Member of Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics and Scientific Reports, among several other international journals. Through these roles, he has contributed extensively to peer review, editorial decision-making, and the development of multidisciplinary biomedical research.
His national and international recognition includes the prestigious Tata Innovation Fellowship (2022-2023), awarded by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. He was listed among the world's top 2% of scientists by Stanford University and Elsevier for six consecutive years, from 2020 to 2025, across the subject areas of biotechnology, pharmacology, and clinical medicine; his reported worldwide subject-category rank in 2025 was 36. He is an Affiliate Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Society for Microbiology. He was also selected as a Fellow of the American Society for Microbiology Future Leaders Mentorship Fellowship for 2024-2026. Collectively, these achievements reflect a career devoted to internationally relevant biomedical research, academic leadership, technology development, and the mentoring of future scientists.
