About
Dr. Sutharsan Govindarajan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at SRM University-AP, India. His research focuses on the fundamental biology of bacteriophages and bacterial pathogens, with an emphasis on developing precision therapeutics for drug-resistant bacterial infections using bacteriophages, CRISPR-Cas technologies, and microbial genomics. His laboratory integrates fundamental phage biology with translational research and has contributed to personalised bacteriophage therapy for patients with otherwise difficult-to-treat drug-resistant infections.
Dr. Govindarajan earned his M.Sc. from Madurai Kamaraj University in 2010 and completed his Ph.D. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, in 2017. He subsequently pursued postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), in the laboratory of Dr. Joseph Bondy-Denomy. In 2019, he returned to India and joined SRM University-AP as a faculty member.
He has received several prestigious awards, including the DBT-Wellcome Trust Early Career Award, DST-INSPIRE Faculty Award, H.P. Tiwari Best Faculty Award, and the Excellence in Ph.D. Award (2017) for the best doctoral thesis. He has secured seven competitive research grants totalling approximately ₹5 crore, including funding from DBT-Wellcome Trust, SreePVF - Translational Biomedical Award, DST-SERB, DBT, CEFIPRA, DST-INSPIRE, and the MeitY GENESIS programme.
Two Ph.D. students have completed their doctoral studies under his guidance. His laboratory currently comprises several Ph.D. students and a postdoctoral researcher working across bacteriophage biology, antimicrobial resistance, microbial genomics, CRISPR-based technologies, and translational phage therapy.
