Short Biography of Birendra N. Mallick

Birendra N. Mallick secured first class first position in M.Sc. (Physiology) and was awarded Calcutta University Gold Medal. After completing Ph.D. from the AIIMS, he preferred joining the School of Life Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as Assistant Professor (1986). He continues to be there and since 2001 he is a full Professor of Neurobiology. Presently he is Dean of the School of Life Sciences, JNU. At various period of his career he was appointed visiting Asst. Prof., Assoc. Prof. and Full Professor at Harvard Medical School, USA; University of California, USA and at University of Sophia Antipolis, Nice, France.

In JNU, starting from scratch he initiated and established laboratory for basic sleep research in particular and neurobiology research in general. Biren Mallick teaches several courses to the M.Sc. and M.Phil. students at JNU. Seventeen candidates have completed Ph.D., >30 M.Phil. and M.Sc. dissertations under him; while >60 candidates from across the country and abroad have undergone training in his lab. In addition to delivering course lectures, he has delivered ~200 invited lectures within the country and abroad which includes Plenary talks, Key note addresses, Inaugural talks, Symposium talks, etc. Several of his Ph.D. students have received research awards in India and abroad including INSA young scientist award (India), Young scientist award (SRS, USA), Scopus-Elsevier Award, B. K. Anand award and many poster as well as conference presentation awards. A large number of candidates coming out of his lab are independent teachers and/or scientists within India and abroad.

The primary focus of Biren Mallick’s research is to understand “Neuroanatomical and neurochemical mechanism of REM sleep regulation” and to understand “Functions of REM Sleep”. Mallick’s hypotheses are “NA-ergic neurons in locus coeruleus must cease firing for REM sleep generation” and “REM sleep maintains brain excitability and thus serves House Keeping Funtion of the brain”. His lab uses classical to contemporary techniques including behavioural, electrophysiological, biochemical, cellular, molecular, computer simulation, modeling and bioinformatics to address his questions; details can be seen from the web site http://www.jnu.ac.in/Faculty/bnmallick/. Biren Mallick has travelled on invitation to at least 10 countries and across India delivering invited lectures. He has published ~110 research papers and book chapters, has written/edited 4 books (Published by Narosa, India; NBT, India; Marcel Dekker, USA; and Cambridge University Press, UK); he has an international patent to his credit as well. In recognition of his research work Biren Mallick has been elected fellows of all the three nationally recognized science academies in the country (F.N.A.Sc., F.A.Sc., F.N.A), West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (FAScT) and Guha Research Conference (GRC). In recognition of his research contributions he has been honoured/awarded by many Universities/Colleges/Organizations/Societies which include the prestigious and coveted Shakuntala Amir Chand Award (by the Indian Council of Medical research, 1992), National Bioscience Award (by the Department of Biotechnology, 1999), S. S. Bhatnagar Award (Medical Sciences) (by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, 2001) and J. C. Bose National Fellowship (by the Department of Science & Technology, 2010) to name a few.

Biren Mallick is a member of various academic, scientific and research bodies in the country. He continues and/or has been Associate Editor and Editorial board members of various National and International science Journals. He is a member of research grant review/monitoring committees under several agencies within India and abroad. He is a member of several selection committees appointed by the Vice Chancellors, Head of Organizations, Governor, etc for selection of Professors, Scientists, academic/research personnels and students at the national level, selection of awards and so on. Also, he has served or presently holds membership and/or chair of various administrative and academic bodies in the JNU. Other than academics during his student days he qualified as a President's Scout; also he represented the Divisional School Hockey Team for selection to the state team.
