About

Kulvir Singh is currently working as Principal Agronomist at the Regional Research Station, Faridkot, Punjab Agricultural University (https://pau.edu/), Punjab, India. His research is focused on plant fertilization, irrigation management, crop production and agronomy of various field crops with expertise on cotton production technology. Since last 25 years, he has been working in a project namely ' All India Coordinated Research Project on cotton ' sponsored by government of India.He is also teaching Agronomy courses to Master's and Ph.D students besides guiding Master's and Ph.D students of Agronomy discipline in the capacity of Major Advisor.

The following information pertains to last 10 years only.

My core focus is on developing effective, efficient and economic production technologies in cotton and other field crops and their dissemination through front line demonstrations (FLD’s). A total of 15 recommendations have been made which include agronomic requirements of promising cotton varieties/hybrids besides recommendations on wheat, and rapeseed mustard and their production technology. Surface drip fertigation in cotton has been recommended for higher yield and better water productivity, which saves ~50 % of irrigation water being used in conventional system besides saving 25% N. Sub-surface drip fertigation (SSDF) in Cotton-Wheat cropping system has been recommended which saves at least 40% of irrigation water and 20% of fertilizers with 21% higher system yield over the conventional method. Post-emergence application of Hitweed Maxx 10 MEC (pyrithiobac sodium 6% + quizalofop ethyl 4%) @500 ml acre has been recommended for effective and selective control of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in cotton. Similarly, sweep power (Glufosinate ammonium) @900 ml acre is recommended for weed management in cotton. I have been associated with release of 3 public sector Bt cotton varieties by PAU (PAU Bt 1, PAU Bt 2 and PAU Bt 3) which have specific niche at National level. From private sector, Bt cotton hybrids (RCH-773 and RCH-776) have been recommended and are well adopted. To promote mechanization in cotton picking through High density planting system (HDPS), optimal planting geometry and standardization of growth retardants/defoliants was worked out for a suitable variety F-2383. Apart from mandate crop, drip fertigation in rapeseed mustard has been recommended. Three rapeseed varieties, Giriraj, RCH 1, PHR 126 and 1 sunflower hybrid PSH 2080 have been recommended and are popular among farmers.
I have received Best Outstation Scientist award from Worthy Vice-Chancellor, PAU, Ludhiana and Director General, ICAR along with a Merit Certificate and a cash prize of Rs.10000/, one Appreciation Letter from Project Co-ordinator (AICRP-Cotton) and one Best paper award during the report period. A total of 57 publications including 20 peer reviewed full research papers, 6 papers in proceedings, 5 Abstracts in symposia/conferences, 5 Review articles/chapters, 1 paper in book/manuals and 20 popular articles in university publications have been published. Out of the total 20 full research publications, 1 is above 15.00 NAAS rating, 6 are above 8.00, 7 publications are above 6.00, 2 are above 5.00 and 2 are above 4.69 rating.
About 440 cotton growers of Punjab were benefited by demonstrating improved production technologies and cultivars through conduct of FLD’s in 250 ha. A total of 60 newly recruited teachers from various departments of PAU have been trained under Induction training program besides teaching MSc/Ph.D courses for strengthening of human resource development. Weekly Agro-advisory to farmers regarding needful agronomic management based on weather prediction data from IMD is helping them greatly in performing day to day farm operations in Faridkot, Ferozepur and Fazilka districts. Besides one competitive grant of NICRA project, 5 government sponsored projects, and 4 company sponsored projects have been handled in the capacity of PI/Co-PI. Numerous farm families have been benefited by me through on farm trials/ technology demonstrations and Kisan melas.
